1 stars   Ah, the Beatles - the Westlife of their day. Writing admittedly catchy but annoying tunes, most of which were performed much better by other artists. Check out Esperanto's version of Eleanor Rigby as an example.

1 stars   This is quite possibly one of the worst of all the Beatles' (very mediocre) output, a clumsy, charmless attempt at psychedelia, which annoys the listener the more s/he listens to it. A complete disaster. They really are the most overrated

He does have some normal reviews for other bands, but his Beatles ratings are clearly abuse and need to go

YES "Close to the Edge"
Review (Permanent link) by Dean
Posted 11:05:52 PM EST, 2/17/2006

5 stars   Close to the Edge is certainly the one Progressive Rock album which has made its way into everyone's collection. I say it was a recording that was made in heaven!, is not only regarded as one of Yes's masterworks, but one of the most influential albums in the history of Progressive Rock. Recorded mostly in one month, Jon Anderson says that "It was around this time Steve and myself spent a lot of time writing, great times... "Close to the Edge' is born.". I think that it´s a good, perfect, cool and amazing record.

This is a fanboy review, the sole purpose of which was to put Yes back on top of the prog chart thing.

KING CRIMSON "THRaKaTTaK"
Review (Permanent link) by Paul Amlehn
Posted 1:18:23 AM EST, 2/18/2006

5 stars   THRaKaTTaK is one of my favorite albums of all time. The musicianship is phenomenal. I disagree strongly virtually all of the reviews here. The reviewers need to developing their listening skills, open their mindds and appreciate this work for what it is, not something else which they would like it to be, based of the principles and predjudices of taste (sic). THRaKaTTak is a testament to the genius of each of the players involved and King Crimson as a collective organsim. For me, this is nthe most intresting of all the King Crimson albums. Organic, virtuosic, emotive, and POWERFUL.

I've written to Bruin. It seems the ratings without reviews issue is still with us though.

KC review will be dealt with.

Yes review is weak, I'll drop him a note too. I don't think it affected chart positions though.

Thnaks guys.

KING CRIMSON "In the Wake of Poseidon "
Review (Permanent link) by madhatter
Posted 10:42:37 AM EST, 2/18/2006

3 stars   I'm listening to it just now, and I think there are some good songs. Pictures of A City, well it's not so far from Skizoid Man... Cadence and Cascade is an interesting sweet song but not so good than you'd think... IN THE WAKE OF POSEIDON, forth track, is amazing, wonderful. the other songs are strangely void and worthless, and I don't understand what Peace means... well, there is just one masterpiece here, the titletrack, all other songs are... well, worthy to listen to...

NO.

KING CRIMSON "Red"

2 stars   where is prog here? what is this album? I think it's a good album, but i don't believe they are really King Crimson... Fripp, the man who write some of the greatest song in prog. I can't believe it. One More Red Nightmare it's a good song, but if you like this album, well, you have to return listening to hard rock...

NO.

FRANCO* BATTIATO Pollution
Review (Permanent link) by ivano @ 3:35:04 PM EST, 8/31/2005

4 stars  —  An internationally known artist, Franco Battiato has been everything in his long career, from beat singer to avantgarde performer, producer, contemporary music composer. His beginnings lay in the mid 60's, with many singles released with no particular success, the first two under his real name of Francesco. He had left the native Sicily (he was born in Jonia, near Catania in 1945) moving to Milan around 1965. In 1970 after his collaboration with Osage Tribe (that he quit before their only album Arrowhead) he had a record deal with Bla Bla, releasing his first solo album in 1972. Fetus, housed in a outrageous cover (reproducing a foetus) was definitely a prog album, but a very original one, with a minimalist sound mainly based on the use of a VCS3 synth, unusual lyrics, complex arrangements. Two tracks, Energia and Una cellula were also released as single. Second album Pollution followed the same route, but the sound was a bit richer with a larger use of traditional rock instruments. A good concert activity led to Battiato being very popular as an alternative artist and Pollution even reached the Top Ten italian chart. These two albums are considered their best (and most musically accessible) from prog fans. With third album, Sulle corde di Aries, the sound shifted toward a more avantgarde style, but the long Aria e rivoluzione remains one of his best tracks from the first period. Fourth album Clic was mainly instrumental, with just a single vocal track, No U turn, and it also had an english release on the prestigious Island label, though this album contains different versions of tracks originally included in Sulle corde di Aries and the italian issue of Clic. His first solo album had also been recorded in an english version, entitled Foetus, but this was never released at the time and only appeared on CD recently. With 1975's M.lle le gladiator we're in full avantgarde music, the album even contains a long church organ solo performance and is a very difficult listen. After the Bla Bla's demise the following releases up to 1978 were all in the same direction, with long instrumental piano or synth performances closer to contemporary music than to progressive. 1979 saw the first radical turn, with the new wave-inspired album L'era del cinghiale bianco that began a fruitful collaboration with violinist Giusto Pio. The album was a big hit and later works followed the same style, with very good arrangements and highly inspired and original lyrics. In the 2000's Battiato is still one of the leading figures in italian music.

This is not a review of the album but just a copy of what's written about Franco Battiato's history on www.italianprog.com/

Yes,it's just a straight lift and whilst we have permission from the good people at ItalianProg to quote the site this is not acceptable.

I will delete it and email him to explain.

MIKE OLDFIELD Tubular Bells
Review (Permanent link) by PROG FOREVER @ 6:05:51 AM EST, 8/9/2005

5 stars  —  This is Classic Music! I do not succeed to define it otherwise! Believe me, Mike Oldfield composes a Mega Suite that would make pale all of the composers of the past centuries! He succeeded to compose a Masterpiece that with time absolutely is improved. And, believe me, the emotions that I experience in the listen I am quite superior to those of a lot LP that I voted 5/5. Immense!

MIKE OLDFIELD Tubular Bells
Review (Permanent link) by Braindamage @ 5:38:17 AM EST, 8/16/2005

5 stars  —  It is debut an album of MIKE OLDFIELD. The introductory part was used by movie "Exorcist". The introductory part fuels the anxiety of the person who hears it. However, music will show a wonderful extension before long, and be drawn in to the world of this tune. It is possible to hear it with freshness still though this tune is the one announced four half a century before. Very mysterious tune.

Top two are on my list (with a couple of other new ones) SBF.

The other two are on line translator efforts. Although they can be hard work, I think the reviewers message is reasonably clear.

With all due respect, I thought the use of online translators wasn't allowed.

It's not banned SBF, just discouraged. As long as the results are intelligible (and that is where it becomes subjectiveWink), they are OK. The problem is, they can sometimes come up with meaningless drivel.

(Some would say there are reviewers who don't need online translators to do that!LOL)

GENTLE GIANT Gentle Giant
Review (Permanent link) by pedro castro @ 2:11:22 AM EST, 11/1/2003
