 Topic: different sub-genres in different KC eras

So, what I just thought is that KC in it's different eras of existence
should be qualificated to different prog sub genres. I think that
basicali it could look like that:
69-70 : Symphonic
72-74 : Jazz/Rock fusion
81-84 : Art-rock
94-96: ?? (artrock/progmetal -sth. between?)
00-...: Prog-metal
So, what do you think?

- In the court of the crimson king, In The Wake of Poseidon, Lizard and Islands: Symphonic Rock with few touches of jazz rock. I think Island is their most symphonic and in the other hand Lizard has more Jazz Rock.
- Lark's Tongue In Aspic, Starless and Bible Black and Red: Experimantal/Jazz Rock Fusion and Art Rock above all, i think. Being "Starless and Bible Black" the most experimental and their more RIO/Avant Garde related.
- Discipline, Beat, Three of a perfect pair: Yes. Simply art rock with few passages of jazz rock.
- Thrak: The same. Art Rock-prog metal (although "THRAKATTAK" is more Experimental and completly and inaccesible RIO)
The ProjeKcts: RIO/Avant Garde prog.
The Construkction of Light and The Power To Believe: Prog Metal with touches of RIO.
I think that there should be a genre called "Crimsonian Prog"

^ well put Tholoymes. I'm most familiar with the Larks Tongues - Red era that also featured some great live performances. Not sure "jazz rock/ fusion" is the best description of that era though!

Well, of their early albums...
ItCotCK and Wake of Poseidon- Symphonic Prog, with hints of Jazz rock.
Lizard and Islands- jazz rock/fusion
then larks, starless and BB and Red are more of a mix between Symphonic hard rock and hard jazz rock. I don't know, a mix between the first two eras, which is kind of funny, because you think it would have been some kind of middle ground, but really it's way crazier than the previous stuff.

I think we deal too much on classifying music by genres. It's O.K. to have an idea of what kind of music a band is playing but we took it too far. It is very funny IMO that Caravan & Soft machine are in the same sub-genre cause Caravan are very melodic and Soft machine are much more jazzy. Personally I ca'nt understand the difference between RIO Avant-garde and part of Canterbury (I would call all of it Avant-garde).
Talking about King crimson I do agree there is some Jazz & RIO in their music (The track that opens Henry cow's "Western culture" (forgot it's name) sounds very crimson to me). I think that Brufford / Wetton era has also progressive metal like TPTB for instance while in the 80's they sound close to Talking heads (now, what sub-genre are they ? they do'nt even exist here in the archive).
I think it is even more interesting to do the same thing with Pink floyd. Those guys did almost every sub-genre that is possible.

Canterbury scene isn't so much about scene as about the location - hence the name, Canterbury's a city y'know.
