5 stars   Reviewing this album should be abolished. It should be prayed, not reviewed. But is it the best album ever? Well, still there is "Islands" and some of Peter's HAmmill's music, so it's hard to judge.

How 'bout this one?  He already says he's not gonna review the album...but for something he wants to keep short, it's incredibly long-winded, with nothing about the album at all...

PINK FLOYD "Dark Side of the Moon"
Review (Permanent link) by Kotro
Posted 5:33:19 PM EST, 2/14/2006

5 stars   This will be a quick review, on which I will not dabble about describing each song and what instruments are played and how, but on my general view of this album. Dark Side of the Moon took some time to grow on me, having heard before all albums that followed it. At first I did find it flawed, with periods of perfection inbetween what looked like helpless fillers. A few years after listening to it, and with time to grasp it's full meaning after being explained like a 6-year old what it was all about, I cannot cease to praise it's brilliance. Dark Side of the Moon is a masterpiece of studio production, with dozens of people involved in its conception, all of which did a superb job. Such a symbiosis of brilliant minds working towards the goal of becoming rich and famous, leaving, as a bonus, a masterpiece not only of prog, but music in general. With this album, Pink Floyd and Company own nothing to other prog giants, or, for that matter, to the great musicias troughout History.

While I'm at it...the reviewer below is on the right track, but I don't know why (s)he gives a 1 star review to an album s(s)he thinks so high of.  Can one of the Special Collaborators e-mail this person?
RUSH Vapor Trails
Review (Permanent link) by AG @ 12:10:08 PM EST, 8/5/2005

1 stars  —  I agree with an earlier review...Their best since PRESTO. This record is adventurous, heavy yet melodic and totally unique. A real step forward for Rush---the epitome of progressive music. I missed the guitar solos as Alex is one of the very best---but the record is amazing. Like any good prog CD it DOES take a few listens to appreciate.
My favs are:
Out of the Cradle, Ceiling Unlimited, Secret Touch, Earthshine, Nocturne, Vapor Trail, Freeze

5 stars   I agree this is a masterpiece, though the Pinky and Perky tribute to the Beatles - "Pigs do Beatles" is perhaps the most definitive cover record which truly reflects the relevance the Fab Four had to prog music...

This is a job for one of the forum collaborators.  I'm posting three of my reviews, with mistakes corrected.  I did them in a rush, so I forgot to correct a bunch of spelling mistakes.  Could someone delete the previous reviews and post the new ones instead?  Thanks.  BTW...if any of the collaborators find any more spelling mistakes in these reviews, let me know, please.

DREAM THEATER Train Of Thought
Review (Permanent link) by Shane B. @ 1:37:13 PM EST, 2/14/2006

5 stars  —  I think the main reason people are putting this disc is because of the somewhat dirty production. IMO, it fits, because these are rough, metal-based tunes.  I like this disc more than OCTAVARIUM (going through a group's catalog retrograde always brings up some interesting surprises) precisely because everything doesn't sound so clean, so polished, so precise. With that in mind, what of the songs themselves? Well, like I said, rough, hard metal-edged tunes, with lots of soloing (especially in STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS), which is one of the reasons I like it so much. Even the shorter, quasi-orchestra-based VACANT is top-notch, with James singing sinister lyrics in a mournful melody over a lush string arrangement. What else do I like here? The keyboards are mixed kinda low, with Rudess working subtly in the background. That's a marked change to OCTAVARIUM, in which Rudess dominates most of the instrumental breaks (and consequently, most of the songs). I can also hear what Myung's playing, which I didn't hear much of on OCTAVARIUM; that's a bit of a revelation. I also like the fact that, despite the layer of dirt atop the recording, I can hear more of Portnoy.  YAY!
HOWEVER... I don't know whether or not to recommend this disc to people, for two reasons: 1/I just started listening to Dream Theater, AND; 2/Due to the fact that people claim they've made better albums (their apex seemingly being IMAGES AND WORDS), I really don't know if the average listener should start here. I do not, however, have any trouble giving this one a full 5 stars.

This one too, please.  Wow...I really f'd up my reviews yesterday, didn't I?

YES Big Generator
Review (Permanent link) by Shane B. @ 2:22:08 PM EST, 2/14/2006

4 stars  —  After having heard some of their earlier stuff, I can now safely say that this was a bit of a mis-step. Why? Well, the production is the only thing I can take umbrage with here. It's a bit bi-polar, moving from dirty to clean at the drop of a hat. That's not something that should be done with precise-sounding pop songs of this nature. For a collection of songs like this, you need a big-sounding pop production, which is noticeably missing.  Now...take a look at that last sentence. Notice the word "prog" was never used. Why is that? Because there is no prog (IMO) to be had. Look all you like, but you'll find none. This is what frustrates the average prog elitist. They look and look for something proggish, only to have it backfire. So there's no prog here. But it's still not as terrible as some (many) would have John Q. Music Listener to believe. To judge an album by what the group did in the past (especially 10-15 years prior) is fruitless and silly. Besides, as a pop record, it's perfectly fine to listen to on its own. RHYTHM OF LOVE kicks things off quite nicely, with soaring harmonies aided by metallic- edged guitars and an underpinning of throbbing bass and drums. It's got a great melody, with some hot leadwork from Rabin; totally underappreciated, IMO. What else do I like? Well, let's see: LOVE WILL FIND A WAY, with its bluesy, funky harmonica solo, I'M RUNNING, which is a fantastic song in its own right. The way the band performs this track moves me to tears, and I can't exactly point out why. Is it the guitar? The keyboards? The vocal(s)? I dunno. All I can say is: listen to it for yourself; judge it by its own merits, and not what they've done in the past. You might feel the same way reagrding the record as a whole.

This one too...geesh!

YES 90125
Review (Permanent link) by Shane B. @ 1:56:02 PM EST, 2/14/2006

5 stars  —  Wonderful album by Yes, this time with the distinctive guitaring of Trevor Rabin providing a solid, study backing. I don't have the same problem with the album that many of the other reviewers seem to. It's commerical. It's slick...it's polished. Big frickin' deal. People; I don't care if you're part of a necro-sounding black metal band; you DON'T get on a record label to not sell records. It does NOT happen, at all. I don't care if you're on Epic, Atlantic, Roadrunner, or a minor label like Inside Out or Laser's Edge. As far as the music is concerned: OWNER OF A LONELY HEART is (IMO) a great song, with an excellent vocal (naturally) by Anderson, who seems to be (moreso on this record than the others I've heard) an inexhaustible supply of vocal melodies and great vocal arrangements. It even has a killer (IMO) guitar solo, with Rabin going buck wild yet keeping things melodic and tasteful. I also happen to like CINEMA, which won a Grammy in '84. In fact, I can't find a single thing wrong with this record. I can't even take issue with the production; Horn did a great job. It's an immediate record, which shows itself quickly and unrepetantly. Whether you choose to go along for the ride or not is up to you. I was tempted to only give it 3 or 4 stars, but...screw it...when the music is this good, I refuse to be a hater and blast it for not sounding like "classic Yes". 5 stars all the way.

BEATLES, THE "Revolver"
Review (Permanent link) by MARK
Posted 11:45:41 AM EST, 2/16/2006

4 stars   WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This album may have some of the beginnings of prog rock, but!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This site is now in dangerous territory. The Beatles were a melodic pop band producing original (extremely rare) songs. But, they were only songs. Any prog they may have produced is vastly outweighed by their influence on pop. Every corner of music regards The Beatles as their own. Oasis think they are The Beatles mark II.

Where's BOWIE on this site. Another is David Sanscious. He produced an album called TRUE STORIES. That album is 99% more prog than anything The Beatles ever did.

If Madonna, Robbie Williams & the rubbish in pop music ever makes here, then change the web site name to Pre-Madonna, non-musicians, love myself, bull[&*!#] site.

That said, if anyone who likes real music has'nt bought this album, obviously you need to do so.

I'm taking a star away because John Lennon once said they were rubbish musicians.

This is a terrible review which should be deleted. I don't even think I will have to explain why. PS: "I'm taking a star away because John Lennon once said they were rubbish musicians."

EMERSON LAKE & PALMER (ELP) "Tarkus"
Review (Permanent link) by Matthew Colquhoun

1 stars   After reading many good reviews on Tarkus I decided to borrow it from my local library. Thank God I didn't actually buy it! Tarkus, the 20 or so minute 'm,asterpiece', is just a mish-mash of percussion. I couldn't stand it. The rest of the songs had more of a rhythm but were nothing special. In one word, I would describe this album as 'over- rated'.

I'm going to think about that one Pafnutij. he has at least tried to say why he doesn't like it. I have to say though, borrowing from the library and (apparently) hearing it once is not the best way to assess any prog album.
