This is a decision that i find very hard to make. At times I find myself preferring CTTE and at other times its The Gates Of Delerium. These are two amazing pieces by the masters of prog ( IMHO ). Both open two of Yes's  greatest albums ( again IMHO ) and both are intense journeys through the human mind and emotions and both desrved to be praised. So any thoughts?

I am always in the mood for Close to the Edge.  I'm not always in the mood for Gates.

Great post I must say. This thread has come up a few times before though and i've literally always said 'I'll think about it and vote the next time it comes up'

In the end I decided that it's Close to the Edge for me, why? It got there first, simple as that.

There's other great Yes epics that everyone should check out, eg. Mind Drive, Ritual, The Revealing Science of God, The Remembering, and Awaken of course. I haven't heard EVERY prog band going but I think Yes are probably the best for epics.

It took me some time to dig into "Gates..." and now I even do not know which one I like more - CTTE or Gates.

Both of them are simply incredible - one of the best tracks in ALL OF PROG!!!! Although Yes is not my Number 1 band

PF, Genesis, KC, Yes, VdGG, GG, Camel, Jethro Tull

'Close to the Edge' for me.

Among the best best prog epics ever written.

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Really I'm surprised Winter Wine. I expected you to vote for Gates of Delerium

Close to the Edge is more melodic, from an academic point of view, so I prefer CTTE's music, but I don't understand the lyrics. I love Gates' music but there is a point in which it sounds too noisy and can get me a little nervous. Nevertheless, I understand the lyrics very well even if English is not my first language.   I voted "equally good".

I like Tormato, so shoot me! Every person in the world can't think the same.

This is a decision I find easy to make. Close To The Edge.

Both great but CTTE raised the bar.

I remember Snow Dog doing this poll already. Still: Gates! Much more uninhibited energy. Much more alive, so to say. More ... errm... spontaneous.

I completely agree it is an easy decision, but choose "Gates of Delirium". "Close to the Edge" is too polished for my taste. The first 2 minutes of CttE are great, but then it loses.

I have to go with Gates of Delirium

for some reason, the whole album seemed like the musicians really let loose and played as well as they possibly could. Just listen to soundchaser, and hear howe's guitar its by far his best work.

I could listen to gates over and over again, and it would never get old. I did do it once because i forgot my cd collection on a trip, and it was all i had. after 7 times listening to the album in a row, it didnt get old.

Both are great but The Gates of Delirium is even better than the superb Close to the Edge.
