Topic: What a surprise, TaaB makes 2nd place Posted: February 12 2006 at 20:17 |
Well look at the score the albums has got, over 200 votes and a 4.70 approx score. I think it will sooner or later be at the top spot.
I think it's pretty easy to see why... some people don't rate albums like Selling England, Dark Side of the Moon, or obviously Brain Salad Surgery as high because of small little things like 'Benny the Bouncer' or 'I Know What I Like' whereas Thick as a Brick is just one continuous excellent piece and therefore a lot people can rant on about how consistent it is etc.
For me it is nothing stunningly original but it's a great work none the less. I think it's top 10 material, but maybe not top 5.
What do you guys think?

as far as Thick as a Brick.... it's as good as either CttE or SEbtP add
in the lack of people fed up with hearing how great CttE is, and tired
of having Genesis overrepresented at the top of the list..... It's a
lock for #1... seriously ... have you EVER met someone who DIDN'T
like Jethro Tull hahahhahah.

Yes, my mother, she always says 'Ah that mad fella', as you can tell, she thinks Jethro Tull is one person, guess which one.
I don't think TaaB has the same impact as CttE or FOXTROT, it doesn't reach the same heights, but it is a stunner.

I hadn't heard TaaB until about a month ago (I know, I was late )
but that's definitely a good place for it. I'd say those are my top
three classic prog albums, although the order doesn't really matter to
me.

I hate to rank albuns ... it is impossible to rank them logically... example: (this is only my opnion)
Can I say that Thick as a Brick is better than The Dark Side or the opposite ?? no.
Can I say that Selling England by the Pound is better than The dark SIde ?? no.
But if I compare Thick as a Brick with Selling England by the Pound i will find Selling England by the Pound quite better .
But The dark Side of the Moon is as good as Selling England by the Pound and in my mind it is still not better than Thick as a Brick.
As you can see there is a lack of logic in the whole thing. And if I continue ranking , in the end everything will be so confusig ...
So, I gave up ranking XD ahahah

hahahha.... don't let her see the Isle of Wright 1970 DVD, or at least
don't watch it with her, the things Ian does with a flute...
as far as TaaB, compositionally it outstrips anything Yes, K.C, Genesis, or Floyd had attempted. Side longs... ,
the ability to keep a 40 minute suite together and not lose a listener
far outstrips a meer 18 to 20 minute piece. When you go dabbliing in an
album long piece you damn well better have a quality basis for the
music, or else the listener has no other place to turn and your magnum
opus... .right into the discount bin. Lots of balls to do that
and to attain the commerical heights Tull did with that speaks to me
that it hit the same heights as CttE. As I wrote to Ivan earlier...
commerical success can be written off of selling out or whatever... to
me it is the best indicator of how an album is recieved. Today
you can vote in some meaningless poll, back then.. you invested
your hard earned 'jack' to hear it.

IMO a much tougher 'listen' than
TaaB but the rewards are greater. It's like TFTO and
Yes fans, it tends to divide those who are 'Tull fans' from those
who meerly like Tull. It's like a badge to be worn... 'YES I love
something that you cannot grasp' hahahahha.

Thick as a Brick certainly belongs in the top 10 might as well be second place. One of the few flawless albums ever made imo.

I'm a bit slow on the uptake at times hahahhah. Can I sign up.
HUGE Tull fan here! though I'm a bigger fan of their earlier more blues
and folk albums.... love their first bassist Glen Cornick.

I'm not in Yes -yet-. But for me is obvious that Thick As a Brick is a much better album than Selling England By Pound. So, what the problem? A Genesis fan will always rate SEBTP with 5 stars, it's one of their bests albums if not the best and -most important- there's more people fan of Genesis than the Tull ones. Maybe early Genesis is better than Tull in general, and that is very important in the votes, but honestly, if we pick only these two albums (SEBTP and TAAB) there's no color man. Thick as a Brick don't have one minute of weakness, SEBTP have it (see More Fool Me and I Know what I like) and we have to see also the difficult and complex of making a concept album with only 2 (of more than 20 minutes) tracks. The result is clear.
Now, a question came to my mind... what could happened if Genesis made a 2 pieces of 20 minutes track awesome album like Jethro Tull? It's easy for me to see that this would be in number 1 position almost forever. But this would be if Genesis made the album, but was Jethro Tull, so Genesis is in number 2 and Tull on 3.

TAAB is and was arguably the most original album ever done. SEBTP is cool, but it doesn't match TAAB or Foxtrot .
