I never associate Genesis with metal or anything heavy. I find them to be
pretty soft overall with some exceptions of dark periods within their music.

I don't really agree with the Jimi Hendrix thing (I am a big Hendrix fan, not
just someone saying that because they don't like him.) He obviously may
have had an influence on metal as he influenced many artists, but he wasn't
the first to create it. I know it was created in '73 by Crimson. Don't know if
someone did it before that.
One likes to believe
In the freedom of music
But glittering prizes
And endless Compromises
Shatter the illusion
Of integrity

^ Certainly NOT Crimson. Others have pointed to Iron Butterfly (68), Purple (68), Zeppelin (69), Sabbath (70), etc.

This is relevant, too:

Steppenwolf  -- Born to be Wild (1968):

"I like smoke and lightning -- heavy metal thunder...."

Edited by Peter
"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.

sample SAT question (for the americans)

Genesis is to heavy metal

          as

Velvet Underground is to reggae.

genesis is my favorite band and i understand that some of their moments can be 'heavy' in the mental sense of the word but musically they're pretty far removed. 21st Century Schizoid Man, in '69, is far closer to 'metal' than anything genesis ever did.

unless you count We Can't Dance...

You don't know High Tide then. (1969)
