Topic: Prog and Video Games Posted: January 30 2006 at 21:22 |
Call me a nerd, but I find this type of stuff very interesting.
Anyway, just put any prog songs that remind you of video games (name the video game, of course.)
For me-
The music all throughout the "Do you Believe in the Day" part of Thick as a Brick- reminds me of Zelda: A link to the Past for the super nintendo.
Lots of Rush songs, particularly the synth era, make me think of Jak II for some strange reason. These include: Subdivisions, Big Money, Spirit of Radio, Camera Eye, Analog Kid, Enemy Within, 2112 to a small extent, others I can't remember.
The synth line right after 'Here come the calvary" in Genesis- The Battle of Epping Forest reminds me very much of Super Mario Brothers for Super Nintendo.
Yeah it's real nerdy. Don't be ashamed though.

Tarkus - the final battle vs. Kefka in final fantasy vi
Starship Trooper - the opening song of Solstice
The Barbarian - the noise the original playstation makes when you turn it on
Ashes are Burning (middle bell section) - Chrono Cross temple of the ancients.

A lot of Dream Theater and LTE reminded me of the music from this old motorcycle racing game called moto racer. Dont really know why though, havent played the game since around 4th grade.(is in 10th grade)

Rhayader Goes to Town from Camel's The Snow Goose reminds of Zelda in many ways, and Frank Zappa's album Francesco Zappa sounds like an old 8 bit RPG.

I've thought the same things listening to both of these songs... I thought I was insane .
I've come up with lots of other examples over time, but I can't
remember any of them off the top of my head right now, unfortunately.

I work as a professional game artist. At our studio, a co-worker
was playing a CD of rock video game music -- things like remakes of
classic NES games. Anyhow, it was very proggy. Lots of
tempo changes, varied instrumentation, long songs.... Cool stuff!

There is a part in the song "Short Time News" by Dreamscape that
reminds me of a course level on Donkey Kong Country 2. At minute 1:31,
when the guitar starts with a strange sound involving "waves" for
instance. The level in discussion is the one where you are in the
middle of a wicked forest.
I can't believe I don't remember very well, DCK 2 being one of my favorite games ever.

Check out The Black Mages, they play Final Fantasy music.Great stuff.
Their album Final Fantasy Battle Music is incredible. The music is less orchestrated, with a harder edge and it's pretty proggy.

Video game music can be very cool, like the Final Fantasy series, Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, Mario Bros. series, Castlevania, and Aero the Acrobat.

For some reason I've always asociated Pigs (Three Different Kinds) with the graveyard section in Red Faction 2, the creepy music goes with the creepy atmosphere. Joe Satriani's Summer Song works well on Gran Turismo 4 as well.

Actually, when you think about it, Yes's, Tull's or Genesis' music
would fit well in Zelda. As a Zelda-fan, I would appreciate it!
Anyone here played Halo 2? The sountrack is really proggy, I could compare it with King Crimson's or Rush's heaviest.

I used to listen "Songs from The Wood" by JETHRO TULL when playing...

...with Amiga500, and now there's an association with these.
