I can understand some people thinking 2001 as boring. It does move at a snail's pace. That film was basically an experiment with what is called "absolute film". Other examples of this type of filmaking are like Bunuel and Dali's Un Chien Andalou and Reggio's Koyaanisqatsi (anybody seen that one?) where the "story" is basically told through visual means with little or no dialogue. Tough to appreciate.

Un Chien Andalu is fantastic. Got me hooked to surreal film. I still cringe everytime he cuts her eye open  . Now that is what I call prog film. Anyone that like prog will diffinetly love that movie, it's so crazy and orriginal.
By the way, has anyone tried the sync between Echoes and 2001, it works alot better than Darkside/Oz and I actually think the Echoes one is intentional.

Or is it Walter Carlos on her Moog synthesizer? 
Anyway, Kubrick is my favorite director, and 2001 is my favorite movie of all time. Dr. Strangelove is 2nd. And all the rest are great.
I wonder if anybody ever actually addressed him as "Stan the Man"?

The movie A Clockwork Orange (with music from Wendy Carlos on his Moog synthesizer) could have been recorded in recent days if you look at the subject, nothing has changed, who are the real psychopaths?!

"Paths of Glory", what a superb movie!!! 
Kubrick is my preferred American director (although I like several others) and from the list I'd also point "Spartacus" - the battle scene is amazingly well filmed! 
Dr. Strangelove, 2001 and Clockwork are also classics! The only funny thing is to see the spacecraft belonging to PANAM in 2001 - Verne's spirit could have helped Kubrick!!!

Almost Famous is great! Crowe didn't miss a beat with that one. And I just love David Lynch, which reminds me of another poll I did way back that I'll bring back. My fav, Blue Velvet! A Masterpiece!

Luis Bunuel was a genius...although it does help to be French to appreciate all his Political & Social Nuances..still, Belle De Jour and The Discreet Carm of the Petite Bourgoisie are superb... |
Actually I've only seen 2 of Bunuel's film, Andalou and Land Without Bread. My fav French director is Traffaut. Shoot The Piano Player is terrific.

Extremely tough call there - in the end I went for Full Metal Jacket. Although the film is a bit uneven overall, the first act (basic training at Parris Island) remains the most stunning thing I have ever seen in the cinema.
I have to agree with Memowakeman about Barry Lyndon, massively under rated.

i believe that kubrick was the greatest director of all times and
movies like clockwork orange and 2001: space odyssey are in my top
5.....don't forget that he was the director who influenced david lynch
more than everyone else......i love david lynch too
