And how many prog bands have bad lyrics? I haven't heard enough of Blue Oyster Cult to decide whether they should be here or not, but any arguments about their inclusion should be based on their music, not one line of their lyrics taken out of context.
|
No, any reasonable argument for inclusion in P.A. has to also consider the lyrics too as well as the music. The lyrics are an integral part of the musical experience.
And I only mentioned those lyrics to remind the BOC fans of the type of music BOC has a gift for creating. Anyone who's heard the song knows quite well the music isn't prog. It isn't even good rock.

I'm a huge Boc's fan and I like also Godzilla, even if I prefer Nosferatu and Golden Age Of Leather (1977 Spectres album).
Godzilla is very different from the rest of the album and my girlfriend like it too!!!!! ( )

Hey, I like it too, when I'm in a partying rock & roll mood. But it's on the level with "I'm turning Japanese" or "Love Shack" or "Rock & Roll Hoochie Coo." Good fun rock, but not the product of a prog thinking band. Same with "Don't Fear the Reaper" great tune, great guitar solo, great rock song by a rock band.

Bluetailfly,
How well do you know BÖC's discography? Have you heard albums like "Secret Treaties"?
I just ask this because you mention only those radio hits which do not
really represent this band well and definitely not the progressive side
of it. Like I said, I think Godzilla is the worst BÖC song and even
Don't Fear the Reaper is only a little above average (though the live
versions smoke!).

Hello geezer,
I have to admit that "Secret Treaties" has managed to elude me all these years. But, if you are so adamant that BOC's music is a hidden prog gem, or prog-related gem, and that it is a shameful crime that they haven't been inducted into this website after all these years, I'll get it and check it out.
BUT, if it's a bunch of rock-structured mediocrity with guitar solos, I'm...I'm...I'm...well, I don't know what I'm going to do, but you can bet I'll resurrect this post and blast BOC like they've never been blasted before...that's my promise to you, geezer!

Bluetailfly,
I do not think that it is a shameful crime that BÖC is not included
here. Actually, if I had the power to decide there wouldn't be any
prog-related artists in the archives. I have noticed that "all" people
here who want to include bands are totally driven by their emotions
rather than dominated by a reason. I never let my feelings about some
band have an effect on my opinion if it should be included or not. So,
I do not really care if BÖC is included or not. I made my previous post
only because it was easy to read through the lines that you are not
really familiar with this band at all (no pun intended).
If you have the possibility to listen to Secret Treaties it would be
interesting to know what you think about songs like "Flaming Telepaths"
or "Astronomy". Just rock mediocrity? Do you really think the lyrics
are bad? Let us know.

Blue Oyster Cult is one of my favourite bands ever!!
It's absolutely natural for me hope it's possible to add them on PA!
There's prog in their discography. Even if not in the most part, proggy examples are great and very interesting!
What a pity if PA will not include them!

I agree, I think the prog-related category is a bad idea for this website.
Now as for "reading through the lines to see that I am not familiar with the band" well, I'm not extremely familiar with their catalogue, no. But I don't think you need to familiarize yourself with a band's entire catalogue before you pass judgement on them. I've only heard the hits by the B-52s, but I'm pretty certain they are not prog. There were times I've heard albums by BOC that others have played for me and I know they are not prog or even proggy.
I look forward putting on my headphones and undergoing into my first experience of "Flaming Telepaths." There's a prog title if there ever was one.

Please do so and let us know what you think. You might be surprised
when you hear it. I really think that you can't judge, like you have,
this band just based on their radio hits.

Blue Oyster Cult is my second favorite band of all time behind Hawkwind.
Albums with prog influence...
MAYBE a handful of songs off the first two albums ("Wings Wetted Down," "7 Screaming Dizbusters")
Perhaps half of the Secret Treaties album (the first few songs, and the last few songs)
Scattered tracks off of their Secret Treaties -> Revolution By Night period
The closest they ever got to prog was Imaginos... a synth-laden and experimental release.
I will be featuring some tracks off that album in my prog radio show sometime in the future if anyone is interested. I've already got the setlist for next week set, but for the week after that I'll play something like "Les Invisibles," "In the Presence of Another World," or "Blue Oyster Cult." Imaginos is really a special album, and even if you do not consider it to be progressive, I think it would appeal to prog fans.

BOC was a very progressive band. They progressed the cowbell, and brought it to musical levels that all others were afraid to try. Seriously dont fear the reaper, man.
I think they are turds.

BOC are a superb band, and highly underrated - it's such a pity that people only seem to judge them by their hits.
I don't think they really count as Prog Rock - although they did some really progressive things - Black Blade/Monsters on "Cultosaurus Erectus" is brilliant, and I love the way it drops seamlessly into jazz from a massively heavy riff and back again. "Cultosaurus.." is my favourite BOC album. "Fire of Unknown Origin" likewise is brilliant, with some proggy moments - but no "pure" prog, and the list goes on in their back catalogue with a few "turkey" moments among the brilliance.

I believe BOC is just as progressive as Queen for instance. They had a few radio hits a long time ago, but a lot fewer than Queen. Surely those hits wasn't prog but still they're quite prog related on some albums. They should be in the PA.

I don't think BOC were even nearly as progressive as Queen, but seeing the bands that are currently being added, then I have to now agree that they're definitely prog-related.
Although I think that's more or less what I said, but with a slightly more positive "spin".

Speak for yourself You are showing that you are 'real intelligent'.
It's obvious to me that all you've heard is the radio hits and the SNL skit with More CowBell.

well done, Lorak!
