I have a simple(?) question for Japanese vinyl fanatics...

Concerning promo copies, am I correct in understanding that releases (specifically, the RCA/Victor label) prior to the early '80s did NOT have the red rectangular box on the upper right corner of the sleeve (with kanji denoting promo)? Sorry for the awkward wording of the question.

Answered my own question...the answer is: "It depends". Meaning, a promo sleeve can look exactly like a regular sleeve, with the only difference being on the actual record label and nothing else. Or, it could have a small red box on the outer sleeve denoting it as such ('80's and beyond, mostly). Don't know why I care about such things, but I do.

Well, a promo sleeve will say promo on it.  The only problem being that if you don't know Japanese, you don't know if it says promo.

Anyway, jap vynils and CD are often excellent!

Thats the thing, it doesn't always say 'promo' (in English or Japanese) on the sleeve. It appears that this was printed on the sleeve more often in the early '80s and beyond, but some records (that I actually own) are 100% identical to a regular production releease except for the actual label on the record...and even then, they aren't plain white labels, but professionally printed as well (with the 'promo' kanji appearing here). Silly nonsense, but I guess thats why they call it an addiction.
