I don't like the way prog archives streams mp3 files now. You used to br able to download them onto your computer, or put them on your xanga or myspace, but now you can only play it through the website. I prefer the old way of doing it.
Life seemed to him merely like a gallery of how to be.

Nobody likes it, but they aren't allowed, so what should they do?

^ I think it would be prudent to remove the streaming.

Very true, but it requires an outside program to do so (fortunately, I have said program, although I've only used it for this once).

So have I.  It does mean you can try out a track first, if you don't like, then you've saved a smidgen of harddisk space.

You can't make them into mp3s - they're already MP3s. As I've said before, people should really stop discussing ways to subvert a measure Max took in order to keep this site running.

I also agree that ideally there would be no streams, but since there's no way of getting lots of these samples (and that's certainly what I see them as) from any legal service, until any other record companies come breathing down the administration's necks it would be rather more useful to keep them. That's not to say that your site isn't a very useful aletrnative for those groups sensible enough to provide their own samples of course, Mike

What would be a good plan would be to remove every sample for bands that do have their own legal ones. I might check a few later on and post them here.

^ another strategy could be to make sure that for bands which offer free samples on their website, the archives offer the same songs.

I agree.  I'm all in favour of streaming, because of copyright issues, but if a band has a free sample, or a full length track on their own website, I guess it's fine for it to be linked into the band page on here.

What I meant Goose, was that you can record the stream and re-make it into an MP3, but it's long-winded.  I've only done it the once.

Mike don't you think it would be a bit pointless to offer the same mp3files that are also available on the band's homepage, since there's also a link on (almost) every bandpage op the progarchives website.

What I think we should do, is, and this will take a huge amount of time, contact artists/labels and ask them for permission. We could ask for the same songs that are online at the moment, but at least it would be legal. We could include an 'arrangement' of some sort under the mp3(download)s stating that you can download them legally as a teaser because of agreement with the recordlabel.
