Topic: Best Year For Prog 1969-1980? Posted: May 20 2004 at 02:22 |
I've nicked this from the other thead on a similar theme. It seems to me that most (well 90% perhaps) of the best prog was made in these years. So from King Crimson 'In The Court' to Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' which year do you rate as the best for prog.
My choice would be 1973 -ELP 'Brain Salad Surgery' and Genesis 'Selling England By The Pound' are 2 of the best and there was plenty of other great prog coming out then.
Over to you...

1974: The Lamb, Red, two of my very favourite 70's records. Pretty much the pinnacle of prog; the year after, it kinda went downhill...KC broke up, Gabriel left, Caravan, gentle Giant, many others began playing pop...

1969 for the first true explosion of music that clearly set the scene for the future of prog, e.g. Krimson, Renaisance, and (never forget) Touch.
1971/72 for the full flowering - does this date also indicate the arrival of new musical technology and instruments (i.e more manageable in live performance then Moogs and Mellotrons)?

Hard to choose between 1972 and 1973. But a feeling just makes me vote for '73

Though I found it difficult to peg one year as best I voted for '74, the year KC's Red was released and Renaissance was hitting it's stride.

HI, THIS IS CÉSAR INCA.
My vote goes for 1973. ELP and Genesis released their top recordings, having lead their musical careers through a crescendo spiral of awesome creativity. KC was starting their most amazing creative phase. After 'Close to the Edge', Yes was proving the world that they were able to push their prog boundaries much further. JT released their second consecutive magnum opus. Henry Cow started their recording career, and Gentle Giant kept going on with 'In a Glass House0 without one of the Shulmans, after an equally terrific 'Octopus'. In Italy, BMS's 'Io Sono Nato Libero', Osanna's Palepoli and Le Orme's 'Felona e Sorona' were three of many relevant releases. What about France?: Ange and Magma were still on the run and very well. In short, great bands going on steadily after great prior recordings, or in the brink of achieving their finest prog hour. 1973!!
Regards.
