I can't accept all you saying "I never did drugs, I don't need that, I prefer music"... How the hell can pretend that when you know what the effects are? I'm sorry, that's just over me. I can go with someone saying he doesn't like drugs, or just think music better, but he has to at least have done it once to have an unbiaised opinion...

Good call on the Kinky Friedman quote.
I have a love/hate relationship with drugs, marijauna in particular.
Yes, I smoke it every so often - about once a month (though more in the
summer and less in the winter, but this is an average).
I've since been able to access the parts of my mind I've accessed
through marijauna through focused meditation, though it takes a longer
time to get in that state and it's much easier to break out of it. The
thing about marijauna is it forces you into that state until the
effects wear off, whereas it's much harder to attain such a state
through meditation. However, when I have found myself within said
state, it's far more intense than anytime while I was high. According
to some Buddhist traditions, it's actually just a mere step to
enlightenment. So if you smoke pot often, you're really just cheating
yourself by thinking you have found the highest state of being when
it's really just the gateway to even better states.
That being said, I still smoke pot occassionally because it's fun. I'm
not looking to attain higher states of being with marijuana because I
realize that I won't. The function of marijauna to me, at this point,
is simply to indulge a little - just like one eats junk food, drinks
alcohol, or engages in other uneccessary but enjoyable activities.
Perhaps it might be better for me to stop, but I doubt it can do any
amount of damage that will seriously destroy my abilities/talents.
Oh, and making music while high is fun but sounds like crap. Everyone
knows that. I prefer to make music while I'm sober, because it's plain
that it's better.

"I'm not looking to attain higher states of being with marijuana because I realize that I won't"
You can say it's artificial, but the fact is that you're in a higher level of consciousness.
And what's interesting is that you become aware of the
terrible "ordinary" state of mind.
That's what our french writter poet Charles Duits wrote in substance about his Peyotl experience:
"I was expecting dreams, illusions, like the Beaudelaire descriptions, and instead, the Peyotl revealed me reality, the land of real".
That's why he renamed "Hallucinogens" : "Lucidogens".

In the end, you won't attain a higher state of mind with Marijuana.
Though it boosts you to the preliminary levels, you find yourself
unable to progress higher if you use marijauna to certain degrees.
The only reason I still do it occasionally is because it's a tad bit
different than just meditating, since you can't be distracted from your
state as easily. That's fun, and in my opinion, is harmless if I only
do it once in a while (which is less than once a month these days).

Weed is neutral IMO.
It only exagerates your initial state of mind.
It can increases your thought flow as it can help you to reach inner silence.

For me, weed can be a very liberating experience, I find that it helps get my mind out of ruts, that is, usual ways of thinking that I don't question any longer. Weed helps me respond slightly differently, usually with more good humor and intellectual curiosity, than if I'm just having a regular day, tuning out most of the phenomena around me, thinking of the usual stuff.
I agree with the earlier post that pot needs to be used sparingly, like once or a month or so, in order for its effects to be most appreciated. And that's the hard part for me sometimes, to not obsess about it and think about doing it. I try to forget that I even have it around.

I used to think I had to be high or drunk to fully appreciate good music, but now that Im clean and sober music sounds better than ever. And I find my tastes in music are more refined. Not much Sabbath and Zeppelin these days, more Bach and Mozart LOL. Actually pot just makes me depressed and paranoid anymore. Im too old for that sh*t hehe.
