Everything what Alvin Lee have to say with 25 tones BB King can do with 3

And you could have said the same thing by not posting here in the first place.

I like music of "Ten years after", I just meant that Alvin is not in the first league of guitarists

I didn't take the time to read all the posts for this thread, but regarding speed: has anyone mentioned the blazing Joe Maphis? Not prog at all, but still...like grease lightning. Plus he plays acoustic so it's even more impressive.

Check out the Woodstock performance on DVD/video of I'm Going Home (By Helicopter),  Lee maybe was fast but had few changes - and the extended performance  went on too long (cf. TYA Undead  live version of the tune). In the UK Lee was labelled 'technoflash' - which is the label still used for a guitarist who has some fast flashy licks, but  does little with them within the context of a tune: a pretty label on an empty can. When we heard the likes of John McLaughlin in performances in the late 60's we realised how limited Lee was in comparison. It continued to work for Lee after a fashion for that type of rock blues, but eventually most people get tired of the same old, increasingly tired stuff. Seeing Alvin Lee 3 summer ago, I'm glad to report he had matured away from that

There are a LOT of ultra-fast guitarists: for example Malmsteen (obviously), Michael Romeo, Jason Becker, John Petrucci, Marty Friedman, Kirk Hammett, Walter Giardino (from Rata Blanca, and argentinean band), Steve Vai, and the rest just power metal shredders ... Confused

But I don't know if there's a song with the fastest guitar solo ... some people say VAI could put 21 notes in a second.

Also, notice how the guitar solo on "Dancing With the Moonlit Knight" - Genesis and three year later - sounds like an abbreviated spin-off of it.

Agree. Definitely excellent solo, one of the best I've ever heard.

Al Di Meola's solo on the song "Duel of the Jester and the Tyrant" off of Return to Forever's Romantic Warrior album has always really impressed me. Not only does he play fast as hell, but the solo has some real emotion and thought in it, something that is hard to find in a lot of today's shredder's music. Also, keep in mind that this was the early seventies, and guitar playing like this was very rare, except for maybe Steve Howe.

might have been mentioned already... but someone told me that Buckethead had one that was so damn fast that someone, somewhere  (Guitar World???) couldn't transcribe it.  Someone PM'd me the song (long since forgotten and deleted....not my style hahahah)... and it was impressive.

Even Segovia an electric guitar opponent said McLaughlin was fast. Guys like this don`t only play fast but it`s amazing how fast they think.

John Petrucci can play faster than anyone, with every note sounding clear and precise, and he can play with many different moods and styles. Malsmteen is fast but he's always playing the same damn scales. Satriani and Vai are close to Petrucci in terms of speed (you can compare them on the G3 DVD), maybe a little step behind him.
I don't know which is the faster solo by Petrucci but there are plenty of ultrafast solos on any Dream Theater album.

Talking about the past, Alvin Lee and Ritchie Blackmore were the fastest guitarists around 1970. Eddie Van Halen was the fastest in 1977.
