The Golden Shalimar Restaurant - reviews
Indian

"With only a few nights in London last year, we planned to go to a different restaurant every night. But, after eating at the Golden Shalimar the first night, we went back there every evening. Incredibly savory sauces. So rich and delicious, just thinking about it is making me hungry." Mark Gilbert 18/10/02

The Golden Shalimar Restaurant
6 Spring Street
London W2 3RA
tel: 020 7262 3763

But this is still waiting from one of the locals to check it out . Also check if they have Ravhi Shankar records because I doubt they will accept Pawn Hearts or 1001 centigrade

And we do not have yet a pub from the brews before or after.

Records shops: Taken from the list of MOJO and Classic Rock mags: I need comments from connaisseurs, so I do not waste time

Selectadisc  34 Berwick street, Soho
Sister ray  - Berwick Street (conflicting infos: either 94 or 35)

Intoxica - 231 Portobello Road, Nottong Hill

Fab music – 55 the broadway – Crouch End

Morps music  - 17, 34&42 Lewisham modern market  & 190 high street – Lewisham- these guys have four shops and three on the same street?

Hugues,

sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Helter Skelter (which was on Denmark Street) has closed down. There's a pretty good music section in Foyles, and there are two branches of Borders which also carry quite a lot of music titles, all on the fringes of Soho.

Selectadisc has changed its name to Sister Ray, but is indeed on Berwick Street which is in darkest Soho. There are a few other places down there, including the second hand shop Reckless which can be well worth checking out. The main branch of HMV on Oxford Street is also worth investigating, though their prices can be a bit steep - you'll be pleased to know that they've got Jan Dukes de Grey in the folk section.

Intoxica can be worth investigating, although last time I was in there I wasn't too impressed with the prog and related selection. I don't know the other places you mentioned.

I can't think of any shops in Camden that are worth visiting, but there are second hand stalls at Camden Lock market that sometimes have interesting items, but the market itself is a bit of a tourist trap with prices to match.

As mentioned before, I'm off to the Golden Shalamar tonight to have a quick check on if it is suitable. In addition I'll scout around for likely pubs to meet in beforehand.

I plan to get to the pub early on Friday and stick an LP copy of Genesis' Nursery Crime on the table so people can see where to head.

All apologies to those who might not like Genesis but it was either that or a 12 inch by Bucks Fizz.

Pubs will most likely be heaving at that time on a Friday, but there's no getting around it I suppose. I don't have any prog vinyls down here in the smoke, more's the pity - maybe I should turn up brandishing my ukulele?

Well there is an argument to say that George Formby was the father of Prog, so why not mate?

I'll probably be finishing work at lunchtime that day, so I intend to get up their pre rush hour and get my barings.

Fear not, by 'early' I mean just before 5.00 or so. I'll not have my drinking head on before eating a meal.

Hello all.

I’ve checked out both the restaurant and the local pubs without any problems. There is a pub; called The Pride Of Paddington, no more than thirty steps away from the Golden Shalamar that should serve our needs as a gathering point (see the map below for the location of the pub).

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?G2M?X=526653&Y= 181142&A=Y&Z=1

There is a front bar and a smaller area at the rear of the pub but as Syzygy has suggested there is a good chance that the place will be full of Friday night office workers so I’ll try to grab any seat and attempt to keep the Genesis LP in view.

The restaurant is halfway down Spring Street and is perfectly fine for our needs with two seating areas (again one at the back and one at the front). The food was good and the waiters friendly but was (I thought) a little on the expensive side so you might want to keep an eye on what you order. It’s my experience on evenings like this with a large group of individuals; the bill often comes to more than you think.

I did look around for alternatives but there was nothing else that was as close to Paddington station.
Should we finish early at Ye Olde Golden Shalamar, we could always pile back into the pub for a nightcap and more prog talk (because there’s always more time for prog).

Nice one Simon - your dedication to the cause puts us all to shame! What time did we agree on for meeting in the alehouse?
