It's called St. Anger because it infuriates me with its crappiness.

horrible record...nu-metalish songs, no solos, and the drums sound truly horrible...i miss cliff burton's age...
Step after step,
We try controlling our fate,
When we finally start living
it's become too late...

I heard it only once... material in my opinion. Not Metalica fan,I admit, and not into hard-rock either, but I did find more pleasure in other albums than this...

IT'S A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!  Being a fan of their older works (from Kill Em All to the black one), this shattered my expectations of Metallica going back to their more interesting ways.  My reasons are as follows:

- Nu-Metal sounding.

- Poor production.

- NO GUITAR SOLOS!

It probably got more recognition than it deserved, simply because it was released by Metallica (it's Metallica, so it must be good...).  If any other band had released this I think it would have been received much worse.

I always liked every Metallica album, from the thrashy early days to the most commercial releases of the mid 90s. When "St Anger" came out, I was expecting a mix of "Kill Them All" and the Black album... and got this bulls**t instead. Sound is horrible, production is horrible... I've not seen anything worse since except Annihilator's "Waking The Fury".

If someone wants to hear what should have been the real follow-up to the Load/Reaload albums, try Paradise Lost's "Symbol Of Life".

I enjoyed it, I gotta say.  Sure, it was no "...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL" or "MASTER OF PUPPETS". Sure; they're great albums, but if you want those, go listen to them.  Someone said that Metallica is always changing, and I can see that.

KILL EM ALL: Mostly speedy, with no time to catch one's breath.

RIDE THE LIGHTNING: Quiet, melancholic parts mixed with speedier onslaughts.

MASTER OF PUPPETS: No doubt; one of the greatest metal discs of all time.  RIDE THE LIGTNING and KILL EM ALL times 5.

...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL: The lyrics are better, as is the music.  A quantum leap in quality up from MOP.

METALLICA:  Their mainstream breakthrough; more commerical, shorter, more melodic songs, but a lot of thought went into them.  I can tell these were well-written tunes, with huge hooks.  No wonder it sold a pantload.

LOAD/RE-LOAD: I didn't get 'em, simply because they sounded like a step DOWN in quality.  What happened to the melody?

ST. ANGER: Awful production, but well-written songs. If you're gonna dump on one, you might as well dump on all of 'em. The production AND writing credits read "Metallica and Bob Rock."

So, it's a natural progression.  Maybe they'll do...prog-death next time.

where can you support the argument of well-written songs????

all the songs are based on one extremely simple riff with no lead guitars at all and lyrics that are repeated over and over again...

WELL-WRITTEN SONGS...should have put IMO in there.  I do believe they put thought and time into the songs they wrote.  I fully believe that James was telling stories in his lyrics.  That's why I sad what I said.  No lead guitar?  So bloody what?  Has that been in vogue lately?  No.  Simple riffs?  So?  Who cares?  Listen to it for what it is...a decent album.  Bravo, guys.

Metallica used to be my favorite band a while ago, but now their music has gotten old to me, especially that album. I think Ride the Lightning is better. My problem with Master of Puppets is mainly the first three songs.... Battery doesn't flow, Master of Puppets sounds constipated and drags on for too long, and The Thing That Should Not Be sounds retarded, IMO. And I prefer Fade to Black over Welcome Home. But I really like Disposable Heroes (my favorite Metallica song), Leppar Messiah is ok, Orion is brilliant (mostly on Cliff's part), and Damage Inc. is good.  And the whole tone of the album, as usual for Metallica, sounds really anal. Of course, my opinion doesn't change the fact that it's one of the greatest metal albums, but I think it's over hyped and I've heard much better, IMO.

Hyped; no doubt.  It took a while to grow on me.  I didn't see what the fuss was all about.  But the more I listened to it, the more intrigued I was.  It IS an important disc beause it was one of the forerunners of thrash, along with PEACE SELLS BUT WHO'S BUYING and REIGN IN BLOOD.

I like "St. Anger", a furious and extremely RAW album, where is evidently the problems of James Hetfield with alcohol and the crisis the band had before they release this album.
It has an unique guitar and drum sound, very trashier, not so rock as "Load" and "Re-Load".
Sometimes it makes madly bang my head. But the problem is that it has not guitar solos, as some of you said before.
So: "IF THIS ALBUM HAD GUITAR SOLOS, IT'D BE EXCELLENT, JUST LIKE ON THE EARLY DAYS ...." Clap
I hope their next album to be like a return to the origins, and if it has the "St. Anger" sound, it's OK. It'll be out this year, I can't wait !!

Are you joking ??

Nu-Metal sounding ??? I'd say Thrash Metal sounding á la St. Anger

The production is good, as I said before it has an unique sound.

And, well, there are not guitar solos ..
