From what I've read, Dream Theater's lyrics are, indeed, awful on the whole - and there's some proof above.
I remain open to suggestions of anything they've done that is regarded as "good".

"proof" ...

Indeed.
It's obvious to anyone that has a clue.

It's not obvious, it's opinion. Opinion's far from obvious.

like the musicianship
dislike the lyrics generally
after hearing a bootleg of their DSOTM performance...I'm done with them,
imho it was awful...

Cert:
That's just one song. And I do agree, they're uninspired and...blegh! But when taking int account ALL of Dream Theater's career, I'd say the good outweighs the bad.

BTW: That particular bit is not particularly good, yet far from "awful" or "disgusting". It seems out of context in the Octavarium epic, thrown in all of a sudden and not properly integrated in the whole track, but I would still call it "good". Not everything has to be perfect, you know.

Agree with Cert. That bit is terrible . And yeah, the BJH ones are better, but not by much.

I've seen threads last year in June/Juli with the highest praise for that bit. It's really just a matter of taste.

Well, yes, everything is. Actually the title suite has really grown on me, so they haven't forgotten how to write excellent music, but the lyrics... sorry Mike, I'm an avid reader of poetry, I don't require of musicians to be poets and vice-versa, and I don't really care about the lyrics in music, but this one is just bleh.

Their lyrics are surely not the best in the world, but they're a bit negatively overhyped.
DT have some big stinkers among their lyrics, but not all of their lyrics are terrible.
