Most of the lyrics to SDOIT (the song) are indeed embarassingly
terrible, but other than that, I really don't have a problem with DT's
lyrics most of the time.

I personally think Dream Theater writes incredible lyrics. Though some of them may be cheesy at times, what prog band hasn't ever written cheesy lyrics??? They all come across an element of cheese at some point, some ridiculous topics - but thats prog.
Dream Theater definately writes much better lyrics than 99% of most bands today.

Sometimes their lyrics can be cheesy, also
James Labrie’s voice can be very annoying
in some parts. The instrumentals make up
for these inconstancies though.

I really like their lyrics. And i dont really understand the reasoning
why people say they write bad lyrics. Allmost every band has some
cheesy lyrics in some songs but cheese does not mean its instantly bad.
And the lyrics fit the song. I like it.

They probably spent much more time with their instruments than with their pencils when they were young, so I forgive them for not having the greatest lyrics. But, if James Labrie ever gets shot on stage or something (and we already have a suspect ), they should try to find a singer with better lyrical qualities, or start doing it in Swedish.

I think that the ideal situation in a band is when the main songwriter also writes the lyrics. But it's not required.

Some are good, like the 'Learning to Live' and 'Voices', some are bad... the SfaM lyrics and 'Panic Attack', for example. But I don't care, the story told by the music itself is much more complete and often quite different from that told by the lyrics.
And when I'm in the mood for good lyrics, I read poetry books, not CD booklets.

I will agree that some are bad but the majority are outstanding boardering on genies! an example of bad lyrics Through my words on SFAM yet and exmple of good lyrics that baorder on genies is Octavarium in partcular in art III when two verses are built up useing titles from other rock/pro-rock songs! FANTASTIC!

Far less contrived - paints a picture of a bygone era very nicely, whilst cleverly putting a spin on the lyrics so that they put it into a kind of perspective.
From what I've read, Dream Theater's lyrics are, indeed, awful on the whole - and there's some proof above.
I remain open to suggestions of anything they've done that is regarded as "good".
