I basically grew up listening to my cassette tapes (in the end I owned well over fifty of them) filled with recorded tracks from the radio or from albums by friends and friend's friends, and so a whole pletora of artists kept me entertained, among them: Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Simon and Garfunkel, The Scorpions, Dire Straits, The Police, Dio, Iron Maiden, Saga, plenty of Finnish rock of course...and my last musical infatuation before my decade long hibernation from music listening began in the early 90's, Guns'n'Roses. But above all were Bon Jovi, the undisputed kings in my casette player! Ah, those were the days some twenty years ago now...it's a good thing I wasn't all that fuzzy about the actual sound on those cassettes, though!

Nowadays if I have an appetite for something outside of prog -and it happens on a regular basis, yes-, I am most likely to choose The Police, my Nick Drake compilation, The Beatles, Talking Heads, PJ Harvey, Dire Straits, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder or some Pet Shop Boys. A special mention to Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, which sounds absolutely right on warm summer evenings...

The thing is, I would like to expand my non-prog collection at a faster rate but all those prog albums I see in the stores just seem to get in the way...!

I was made to love magic

GnR for me, since they're responsible for probably the greatest mainstream rock album ever - Apetite of Destruction

The hair metal era! I prefer Mr. Big over GnR, though both are very good!

From that listen I'd pick up Depeche Mode. Other I've listened through my life in more or less intensity are New Order, Joy Division, Elton John, Phil Collins,Madonna ...

Outside that list I would mention The Corrs, Tears for Fears, Simple Minds, U2, The Police and a long etcetera

Yay!. My father introduced me to music really. He taught me how to play the guitar, drums and to sing. Half of those listed are his favorites, alongside Styx, Beatles, and other folk rock artists!

i didnt know that S&G are one of Yes main influences! thats cool!

Before i got really into prog, it was only black and death metal for me. I find that you can gain a lot for being a fan of these genres because i like 70's prog, which is old, and the musicians are old, while death metal is continuing to run strong. I can see concerts many times a month and the musicianship is outstanding.
