Agree, I enjoy '2112', 'A farewell to kings' and 'Hemispheres', I don't know why but I love 'Hold your fire' (shame on me ?) and, unfortunately, I find most of their other stuff to be boring.

Returning to the topic "Geddy's voice"...
I don't find Geddy's 70's voice annoying, more like "different" and "extraordinary". My parents get annoyed now and then, but my friends don't. It is true that his voice has gotten better during the years, (I think the voice change happened between 'Pheres and 'Waves) but songs like "The Twilight Zone" and "The Trees" have that certain kick in them, which makes them sound better in the 70's than today. I just think he should use his vocal range a bit more, 'cause what I know, he can reach lower tunes too.
But all in all, Geddy is an outstanding singer, although I understand people who dislike his 70's voice.

I like Rush, but there are at least 30 bands that enjoy more than this Canadian band. The 3 members are about as talented instrumentally as the 3 members of ELP (except for the singer: I love Lake's voice). The problem is that I don't think they use the talents to create the style of music that I like. On the other hand, whenever they make instrumentals (La Villa, YYZ), they usually are excellent.
To sum it up, they are very talented, but not my style. I am not going to call them overrated, because I know that these guys are really something.

I used to be a huge Rush fan and I still have alot of respect for them, it just seems alot of their later output is very uninspired. But Ill always love "Caress of Steel" and "2112".

Once again, slippery has proved to be the worst topic starter!

totally ambivilant about Rush... though I liked them years ago.
The music hasn't held up well as I explored other areas of prog.
I don't think they suck or anything like that but I don't really think
they are all That great. Much like I view Dream Theater....
great chops.... average music.

I'm not a big rush fan, I think of them as a good 2nd tier prog/hard rock band
2112 and Farewell to Kings are both very good
I find their sound a bit monotonous though, not a good acoustic:electric ratio IMO

This flies in the face of what I know to be true. Everybody actually loves Rush. It's a fact.

hell where are the harpsicords, saxs, flutes and other instruments that
gave prog so much 'color'. Great guitar, bass, and drums...plenty of
that in traditional rock. At least toward the end of their prog
years they added synths and then fell in love with them and Geddy's
bass playing suffered (which to me was the best part of Rush) ...
but never did anything really all that interesting with them.
Anyone who finds Rush's music interesting after 20 or 30 years of
listening has my respect as a loyal fan hahahahahh I sure couldn't.

But Genesis '70-'77 and Yes '70-'77 (strange-same years) were the most influentional and revolutionary prog ever. Rush were great, but not as great

The reason people have such a hard time with them is that they don't really fit into any recognizable category. They are a class unto themselves. They transcended metal, they tanscended prog, they transcended synth pop, they transcended whatever you call their 90s stuff. They stand alone as a distinct musical entity and most people just don't know what to do with that. BTW as to which sub-genre they should be in.. just call it Rush

I don't hate Rush at all, have most of their albums and all their DVD's, but I can't help thinking in them as a second level band.

Yeap, but far less brilliant.
Rush is an average band, good but not great IMO.

I agree completely and have been tossed into the 'Rush hater'
column for daring to think such heresy on other discussion sites
hahahahha.

Far less brilliant? If that's what they are for not releasing
some of the most pathetic drivel like We Cant Dance and 90125, then
let's hear for it for those dummies in Rush.
