Topic: To Anyone Who Plays An Instrument Posted: January 10 2006 at 20:51 |
When you listen to a song, and you just NEED to know how to play it, do
you read tabs or Music Sheets? Everyone I know uses one of these two,
except for my dad who gets everything by ear.
Just Curious. I personally use tabs.

I used to play piano and guitar 20 years ago. I had 4 years of piano lessons but I'm not a very good player though. I failed my grade 2 piano exam but I passed grade 5 music theory so in theory I am a good musician.
I always bought sheet music and played songs from those. I once took Iron Maiden's "The Number of the Beast" sheet music to my piano class and after a few bars, the teacher asked me if my parents knew what kind of music I was listening to.

Actually the song has a striking resemblance to "Oh when the saints"

I can't read tabs so I need sheet music to play anything right (although I can occasionally work out bits just playing by ear)

I use my ears. I can't read a lick of tab. When I absolutely MUST know how a track is played, I listen to it several times to get a general idea of hte melody, then tap it out on a piano.

5%, not more. But I agree, sometimes even "official" tabs contain obvious mistakes. So I rely on my ears, and use tabs to speed up the process of learning a song.

Well i actually spend longer time learning the songs by tabs instead of just listening to them by ear and some tabs is not in the right key even!
Infact i was amusing buying a offical tab book and seeing that there was actually some tabs that was completly of...it was not baringly similar...i would only trust them tabs if they had been written by the artists themselves

I combine all three. The program i use to learn songs, just like music books, contain the sheet music and the tabs. I use both to learn the song, but whenever there are error in the tab, or certain techniques or sounds used in a song, I will play by ear and get that stuff down.

Also alot of it depends on what kind of music you play and what instrument. I play alot of classical guitar and alot of the CG repertoire you have to learn to read standard notation in order to do it correctly. But when I play electric just jammin around I pretty much play by ear. If your hammering out bar chord riffs and playing Sabbath and Metallica you could get by with tabs but I personally dont like them. I would suggest learning to read music, you'll be a more well rounded musician and since it is the universal language of writing down music it is alot more accurate than tabs.
