I have recently been introduced to Gong. I have the albums 'Flying Teapot' and 'You' and I have to say i'm really starting to like them. They are VERY wierd, The lyrics! And some of those spacey vocals! To me they sound like what syd barrett would have been had he not gone mad, Something from the original 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' movie, And a touch of Soft Machine of course!

Anyway i'm listening to them now and I would like to know what people think of them, And the albums I mentioned.

Are there many Gong fans here???

I have only heard You, Shamal, Gazeuse and Expresso II, and I like those albums a lot. Especially Gazeuse. Brilliant musicians on all 4 albums too.

I can;t stand Gilly Smith, I think she detracted enormously from that band -- her space whisper is just irritating to me

I much prefer the fusion Gong (so not GonG) of 1976-onward, led by Pierre Morelen

both Expresso II and Downwind are great fusion albums

Flying Teapot is my favorite Allen era Gong record

I really like 'Flying Teapot'!!! Great record, Wierd yet very musical too. I love them, Seem like such a bunch of spacers

I'm a huge fan. I have almost every album up to Time is the Key. Camembert Electrique is really good if you haven't got it yet, and the best of the PM years would have to be Downwind.

I only have the two I mentioned there, What about the one in the middle, 'Angels Egg'?? Is there many good Gong albums??

They are all good to me and yes, Angel's Egg is a very good buy if you are thinking about getting it, but I still like Camembert Electrique more. Also, Daevid Allen's album, Good Morning, is a must-listen for every Gong fan!!!

big Gong fan. according to Friede, who is a drummer herself, Pierre Moerlen, the drummer who joined on Angel's Egg, is (or rather was, since he sadly died May 3rd 2005) the best drummer of all time and influenced her drumming style the most. he also played with Brand X, Mike Oldfield, Tribute, Pekka Pojolah and on the first album of Steve Hillage

I have "Camembert electrique", "Flying teapot", "Angel's egg", "You" and "Live etc" they're all good albums, but my favourites are "Camembert electrique" and "Flying teapot".

I heard "Angel's Egg" and, while promising, I ultimately found it disappointing. Guess I'll dig it up again. Also heard some other songs, and I agree with Nets - Gilly Smith's whisper is really annoying and simply detracts from the music. However, what I heard from the more fusion side of Gong I enjoyed thoroughly.

i think Gong are a bit of an aquirred taste but i love them especially the early albums. what about steve hillage albums.

They recorded some real kick-ass stuff, but often they threw some throwaway stuff inbetween. Some discard their first album, but I think it's a very nice early psychedelic effort, comparable to Pink Floyd's "Piper".

My favourite is "Camembert Electrique", followed by "Angel's Egg" and "Flying Teapot". "You" is overrated IMO.

I love all the Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth-era albums (up to and including
"You"), with "Camembert Electrique" being my favourite. The first post-
Allen album "Shamal" is also great, although very different, being a
relaxed, almost new age-ish fusion of folk, jazz and world music
elements. Subsequent LPs are very intricate instrumental fusion, but a
little inorganic for my tastes,

Gong is among my favourite bands... (in a tie with Hatfield, Camel and Soft Machine, actually) I've got all the albums up to Shamal and they are all fantastic. My favourites however are 'Magick Brother', 'Flying Teapot' and my overall favourite is 'Camembert Electrique' an amazing album... if you like Gong and you havent yet checked this one out, which is very possible, you owe it to yourself to buy it.

You have to get Angels Egg.  It's their best in my opinion.  It has the perfect mix of the humor from "Flying Teapot" and the space jams from "You".
