Topic: A challenge Posted: December 25 2005 at 07:41 |
What do all the following albums have in common?
Close to the edge Selling England Thick as a brick Foxtrot In the court of the crimson king
Yes they're all in the top 10. They are also, apparently, 1* albums according to the ratings of zabriskyiepdsointw. Funnily enough, Dark side and Wish you were here are 5*.
Now, I don't like all those 5 albums but they are all either far too important in the history of prog and/or well played to get 1*, which should be reserved for real turkeys. I think that this is a blatant attempt to push the 2 Floyd albums up the ratings. He has trashed others as well (Moonmadness and Octopus for example which just happen to be near Meddle in the chart).
Now I know that this guy posts on here (so he can speak English) so he'll probably see this and understand it. So come on and defend your opinions. REVIEW these albums and tell us WHY they are so bad so we can admire your analytical genius and marvel at the subtle nuances you have spotted that make these albums so crap and that all the rest of us have missed. Or is it just that they're not by Pink Floyd?
I bet he won't take up this challenge.

Petition Max to have ratings without reviews scrapped
AT the very least prevent them from affecting the Top 100 !!!
So get PMing NOW!!!!
This is a big issue, but a lot of work for Max to remove the one's already in place. How about if he deleted one's from say Dec and blocked all future ones???

^^^ Good point, Tony (Fisher)....I'd let one of the admins know, because frankly, this sort of behaviour only calls into question the overall credibility of this site as a resource for those wishing to learn about 70's prog classics.
You are absolutely right when you say that 1* should be only used occasionally, for absolute Turkeys (how appropriate..) and I would say the same for 5* masterpieces, and yet I have looked up albums which have a 3.8* overall rating, and find 10 ratings which are all 1*, 2* or 5*...nothing in the middle!!!
I find it very frustrating....

^^^ I think that's probably the most realistic way around it Tony R, although there are people around like me who really aren't very good at writing reviews (who like albums but can't effectively explain why, to the overall edification of PA forum members) who would be not allowed to grade the albums they listen to.
There is also no guarantee that those who merely grade are going to be more or less biased than those who write reviews similar to thoise highlighted by Tony.....

I don't think we can intervene in the rating of an album...it is
strictly related to the reviewer's opinion...therefore if the reviewer
considers it a 1 star album,it has to be shown as a 1 star album for
him and accepted this rating...It's not important the fact that it is
in top 100,top 10,top 5,top 2,it is not that it is generally considered
one of the best achievements in music or a representative creation of
prog,it counts the opinion and only the reviewer...remember,the
reviewer must combine objectivity with a touch of his own feelings...
HOWEVER
I am strongly against rating without reviewing...this site, this
section, more specifically said,is based on reviewing,on creating decent
opinion and presentations of an album...therefore I see it as a
compulsary element the presence of words,of explanations,of criticism
etc. Just laying down a rating, just showing it as an x-star
album,without justifying your rating at all is,what I find,totally
unappropriate, and should not be allowed on this site...If you can't put
50 decent words head-to-head,then better stay out of reviewing it...

The charts can are easily manipulated. Genesis fans are as guilty as most! It is blatantly obvious. That's all I'm saying

No, I've been doing some analysis of the charts and ratings, and the only obvious culprits for a SYSTEMATIC attempt to manipulate the charts are a group of Van der Graaff and King Crimson fans who trashed all the albums in closely competing chart places about 3 months ago. There's no clear evidence of abuse by Genesis fans at all. I still think that ratings without reviews are worthless which is why I won't give them. I don't have a problem with other peoples' contrary opinions, but I do like a good laugh when they try to justify them and I can only do this if there is a review.

In the beginning I thought that ratings without reviews were OK but now I think that they don't help too much.
I have some difficulties to type and also English is not my language - I miss certain technical words and expressions related to the musical language, but I always make a review before rating (one may say that my reviews are bad which is a reader's right - but I try to be honest and write what I feel).
I propose that initially all ratings 5* and 1* without reviews should be eliminated. In the future we could erase all other ratings without reviewing and maybe create a space for non-English reviews pending for a good soul to do the translation in order the translated review and the correspondent rating may be incorporated in the PA.
Err, since it is technically difficult to implement what I wrote above I guess that this rule could be valid for the reviews posted after zero-hour January, 1st, 2006. New year, new rule.

It's not me, if that's what you mean...
I rated those albums as Ezequiel I think.

No - similar but different ID. You talk sense, unlike him.

I don't see the point of the option of rating albums without reviewing them. Why not simply get rid of it altogether?
