Topic: Kings of Progressive Rock (Revised) Posted: December 19 2005 at 14:09 |
Sorry about the last one. This time I'll just go by the top poeple I see on the countdown.
for those who didn't read the last one, I said "Who was the artist that came to the light and gave us the most prog sound ever?"
Please also mention the bands most Prog Moment (Album or Song)
Okay, I'm just going by the first 15 what I see on the top 100 albums
Yeah a lot of those guys shouldn't be on there, cozno way they are the kings of Prog, but don't want to leave any out

I don't think it's possible to identify one band (or one moment of one band) that provide a perfect example of what prog is.
The closest I think you can get to a perfect example, IMO is Supper's Ready by Genesis.
I'm a little curious as to why Tool and Supertramp made the list when
the most important Prog band since the 70s is nowhere to be found.
Marillion.

I say Yes. They really seem to define prog with CTTE and Relayer. They are basically the ultimate example of what progressive music is truly about.

I think someone has said this before, but I agree with it:
KC invented it, Yes brought it to the people and Genesis perfected it.
Still, I vote for KC

If your problem is Yes, I have the same with Genesis. I actually like The lamb disc 1, some moments of Selling England and Foxtrot, but IMO the last two albums could be one single good LP - nothing more like this.

Genesis. The sophistication of the Lamb rivals jazz and classical
compositions. Best 94 minutes of music. The epic variety of Fly on the
Windshield to In the Cage to the Lamia (and I've had to restrain myself
from listing all the tracks on the album minus that Waiting Room, which is
just now growing on me)

I voted for Rush because they best represent how complex prog rock really is.

"Pawn Hearts" by Van Der Graaf Generator was far beyond anything related with Prog before CTTE or Foxtrot. Unfortunately they don´t proved a decent secuence of recordings and good evolution.
I think KC is the only one who kept the flame of Prog alive through the years.
But... I voted for Genesis.

Because they are so complex and avant-garde that people don't bother listening to them
Seriously, Tie between Genesis, King Crimson, ELP, Gentle Giant and Yes.

I voted for YES (big surprise), but of the bands listed, you have to admit that YES, Genesis, ELP, Jethro Tull, King Crimson & (not listed???) Pink Floyd all contributed mightily to the PROG cause.

Seriously, in order:
- Genesis
- Yes
- Dream Theater
- Jethro Tull
- Emerson Lake and Palmer
- Gentle Giant
- King Crimson
- Rush
- Opeth
- Van Der Graaf Generator
- Camel
- Frank Zappa
Haven't heard the others, don't like Tool

Nearly fell off my chair laughing reading this! Their is nothing complex or sothisticated about Genesis music. The numerous tribute bands are testament to that! If their is any justification in this poll, the top 5 will be!
- YES
- ELP
- JETHRO TULL
- KING CRIMSON
- GENTLE GIANT
But of course the Yes wannabe's with masks will get a few unjustified votes.
