It seems sometimes Kansas is misunderstood , some think of them as prog others think of the tune "dust in the wind" and place them in the classic rock genre , the nature of this poll is to ask you what genre you think Kansas  belongs to ?

I will never believe that Kansas in the glory days is anything but Progressive
Rock. What kind I have no idea. Seems like "Progressive Classic Rock" or
something like that. There is no band that sounds like Kansas and that's
what makes listening to them so much more enjoyable.

In fact, I really don't understand how some people wouldn't consider them
prog.

Its because of "dust in the wind" and "Carry on Wayward Son" those two songs stamped Kansas with the classic rock tag and its been a curse despite the fact I think both of those songs are brilliant

BOTH. they had definite prog sensibilities, but they also liked to
rock out. Leftoverture surely qualifies as a classic rock gem,
though it is fairly progressive. It seems to me that, though
Livgren was responsible for most of their hit tunes (carry on
wayward son, dust in the wind among others), he was their
main prog writer, responsible for much of their prog side. On
the other hand, Steve Walsh wanted the band to go in the
direction of much more straightforward hard boogie rock, which
is seen on a fair number of songs. They had both these
elements, and overall their music is complex boogie hard
progressive classic rock!

Kansas was Prog in the 70s when they started.

In 2005 they are legitimately entitled to reside in BOTH categories.

As others have already said, why can't they be both? They sure are prog in my opinion, but what I've heard certainly has a "classical" sound to it, especially in songs like Dust in the wind, which is already mentioned.

Definitely 'prog' for me; even though their early albums tended to have somewhat lumpy boogie numbers that don't fit in with the rest of the prog epics they did.

However, there is a more heavy rock direction that most UK bands had that doesn't make Kansas any the less prog, but are more accessible to the average rock listener. I'd say pretty much the same about Styx's early work.

no I don`t think so prog isn`t the same genre as classic rock

I refuse to vote. You have no "Both" selection. Kansas is welcomed in both progressive circles and classic rock circles.

They were pushed that way but so was Yes, ELP, Genesis and Rush but like all those bands they did not begin that way.  They, unfortunately for them, got lumped into that AOR bands like Journey, Toto, Foreigner etc.  I think they are way more than any of those groups in their music and substance.
