I don't know if this topic has been brought up yet but I haven't found it and I think it deserves conversation.

Which version of Echoes do you guys like better?  The version on Meddle or the version on Echoes.  My first listen to of Echoes was on the CD Echoes and I always thought that the song was perfect.  And upon listening to the Meddle version of it I decided that Pink Floyd definately knew what they were doing when they cut almost 7 minutes out of the song.  I feel that the timing is now better, the ambient noises were cut down to a lovely medium and it now sounds perfect after the edit.

What do you guys think?  Meddle Echoes or Echoes Echoes echoes echoes...

I didn't vote because I haven't heard the version of Echoes on the Echoes compilation.  I don't buy greatest hits compilations.   My favorite version of Echoes, though, is on a bootleg called Total Eclipse.  This version is live (I don't know when or where) with a saxophone player (I'm guessing Dick Perry).
Echoes is a masterpiece, and I can't imagine cutting seven minutes out of it, but if I get the chance, I'll check out the version on Echoes.
BTW, I have heard the version of Shine On on the Echoes compilation, and I thought that cutting the last five or so minutes was blasphemous.

It's  fine to me either way...of course,I kinda prefer the Meddle Echoes, because it goes very well with the rest of the album,on the compilation Echoes it is separated...and Meddle is a continuous albums in a way, another valuable argument to listen Echoes on that album...

I actually prefer the Echoes on Echoes. It's more to the point, I never really liked all that nothing in the middle there anywas. They should have cut out more of the middle and left the opening guitar solo in.

You can't chop up a PF song and expect it to still be good. I hate how on Echoes it cuts out some of the best parts.

I was appalled when listening to Echoes on Echoes and listening to cut after cut in thier best song. By editing the song it may get to "the point" faster, but it totally deletes the real "point" of the song when they take out the most of the atmospheric parts that really make the song a gem. Comparing the Echoes version of Echoes is exactly like comparing The Division Bell to Darkside of the Moon or Meddle. I think Floyd's last two studio albums are ok, but for the Floyd standards I don't think they are so great, mostly because the songs on those last albums are weak instrumentally, lyrically as well, but that's besides the point. If you like the Floyd after Roger left, then you will probably prefere the Echoes version of Echoes, but for the people that really know Floyd and know good instrumental rock I am sure you will agree with me when I say that the Meddle version is far supperior to the compilation version and arguably supperior to any of their other songs. Deffinetly their best song ever IMO.

Why don't we cut Supper's Ready to 17 mins while we're at it, some seem to think the instrumental parts of a song are a waste of time, or boring. I for one, support every second of a prog epic.

I didn't know they had edited it. I don't like the idea, but anyway I'll try to listen to the edited version...

Can't really vote, I haven't heard the "Echoes" version; on the one hand I do think the version on Meddle does wander off a little too much; on the other, I tend to think it's wrong to mess with an original track - e.g. cutting the final minutes off "Shine On" does NOT sound a good idea!

Some narrow minded posts here.  I was sort of hoping that more of you guys would post reasons why you thought the way you did instead of what seems to be smug comments.  Eh.  If you say that Pink Floyd cut out some of the best part of Echoes... explain why they are the best parts, especially since I don't think the same way.  I still believe that Pink Floyd was accurate and right in their decision to cut out parts that are mostly silence.  ... convince me otherwise!
