I've recently acquired some tracks by 'Van Der Graaf Generator', I've always wanted to hear them because i've been told good things about them, What I would like to know, Is if I was to get one of their albums in the next while, What should it be?? I've heard 'Killer', 'Man Erg' and 'Pilgrims'. And they're so brilliant!! Can anyone give me a bit of advice...

My favourite is H To He
"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

It's hard to find their records in shops, And when I do they're always very dear!! I end up seeing something else and buying it instead  But i've decided after hearing those tracks it'd be well worth It

A good startpoint is "H to He I am the only one" or "Still life", which are thier a little bit more accesible mastrepieces. Then you shoud try "Pawn hearts" and "Goodbluff", which are slightly more "weird" than the two above.

The Least We Can Do... Thats The One In The Q Mag Isn't It. Never Seen That One In The Shops.......

Best order on line, although I noticed here in the UK they re-released all the VDGG albums when Present came out earlier this year. I bought all the above mentioned in either HMV or MVC

I second that. Just step away from the "Van der Graaf" records. Buy only the "Van der Graaf Generator" ones.

I seen 'Present' in Virgin, 26 Quid!! Hmv over here have 'Pawn Hearts' at the moment, It's in a state Though. Looks like they used it as a frisbee. Might order some from the music store, If it's reliable!!

Wow. Not A little Harsh? I've Heard Good Things About It. Think It Was Uncut That Gave It 4 Stars...

If you do get vital make sure you get the new re-issue just released.

If I were in your shoes i'd get Godbluff, Still Life, World Record and Present and listen to them in that order.

In this order:

Pawn Hearts
Still Life
H to He Who Am The Only One
The least we can do is wave to each other
Godbluff
World Record
Present
The Pleasure Dome/The Quiet Zone
Vital

I think that's all bases covered.  Also worth buying, but difficult to get hold of is The Aerosol Grey Machine, I actually play this a lot.

I just haven't really got into Godbluff as much, I prefer Still Life.  But I do like World Record.  Meurglys III: The Songwriter's Guild is an epic and Masks is great to.

I believe I'm rating Godbluff to low, it has The Sleepwalkers on it and this is one of my favourite tracks by VdGG.

Aerosol grey machine is OK.

I can't understand why is so underrated:

Album

68-71 Compilation Album (1972)
1. Afterwards
2. Boat of Millions of Years
3. Whatever would Robert have said
4. Lost
5. Necromancer
6. Refugees
7. Darkness
8. Killer

My first VDGG was compilation from first 3 albums: Aerosol grey machine, At least we can do ..., and H to he...

I think it's exelent selection for start

you can't go wrong with VdGG. I'm eagerly awaiting the live album from the Royal Festival Hall concert
