Hackett v’s Latimer

I didn't pay much attention to the Hackett v Howe poll as I don't see many similarities in their playing styles as they are both great in what they do! Both very unique IMO.

However, whenever I think of Hackett's style I automatically think of Latimer and vice versa. Both are masters at creating great atmospheric sounds and an equal ear for melody. I do however prefer Latimer because he is more prominent on all Camel's output, whereas Hackett always seemed to me to be too restrained. Having said that, Camel was Latimer's baby and the principal songwriter thus having more creative input. Hackett on the other hand always sounded as if he was playing second fiddle to Banks. There are some Genesis LP's that don't have any memorably Hackett licks on them or least they are very few, whereas I hear the opposite on Camel's albums. Latimer is always prominent!

So my  vote goes to Latimer!

i really like boths, but hackett can create incredible emotive moments like any other 

Latimer - the master of the melodic solo, and the best of only three guitarists I know of who are capable of squeezing every drop of emotion out of a single note (Gilmour and Rothery being the other two).

Hackett has more than his share of moments, but he's not as consistent as Latimer, IMO.

I chose Hackett, but it was close.

In the Hackett vs. Howe poll I went with Hackett,but I have to vote for Latimer in this one.

They're both the first 2 of my list! Beginning with Andy Latimer.

Just listened to Lunar Sea, then tried Every Day. Result? Draw. I'm one of Camel's and Latimer's greatest fans but I admire Hackett equally. They are also both brilliant technically. Rothery and Gilmour are brilliant with melody too but not quite as technical; still great though.

I think Rothery is deceptively technical, he just doesn't show it very often. Take the sweep picking in the Easter solo for example.

Anyway, this was really close, they're both great but in the end my vote went to Latimer. He is a far more consistant player than Hackett. Hackett suffers from a bit to much modesty, he doesn't "let go" enough and play his heart out like Latimer does on a number of occasions.

I love Latimer's Guitar work, and his flute work. Not to say that Hackett is bad, as far as classical goes Hackett is far, far better. Both very talented. 

Lattimer is more of a stand-out for me as a whole, but what Hackett does in Firth of Fifth is unparalelled.
