One of the few prog groups in which every member gets a nice individual credit on their songs ... allowing us to see the different songwriting styles develop (a fair number of solo albums were to follow too) ... but this poll is simply about who you think wrote the best material for Pink Floyd ...

Despite my being a fan of everyone in the band ... there surely is only one obvious answer ...

or is there?

Dont' think this is a fair poll. Roger did most of the writing of the better stuff himself. But I think that just shows how good he really is. Dave Gilmour's alright, but not too great by himself most fo the time. Barret only wrote really psychedelic stuff, so he loses my vote. Rick Wright wrote some good (yet forgettable) songs, and Nick Mason................................................ well.... you get the idea

Wright wrote alot of great stuff..

The great gig in the sky, Any color you like and without him echoes wouldn't exist ..

But sure waters is above all, he wrote most of the stuff.

Don't forget the band's chemistry.

Most of songs have been written by Roger, but PF sound is a result of all band members' efforts. It is a usual thing, take any band and compare its works with solo albums, differences are always obvious.

So IMO best songwrirer in PINK FLOYD is: Waters - Gilmour - Wright - Mason.

Who are you and who am I to say we know the reason why... (D. Gilmour)

Yup in the end, Waters is the most consistent genius for me, Barrett is also a genius, but burnt out so quickly ... maybe the more original/anarchic for the two, though, in fact I think both Waters and Gilmour have said that the earliest post-Barrett songs ... they were just trying to imagine what Barrett would have written ... still I voted for Waters

Wright is very good, but by his own admission, too lazy ...

Gilmour pretty damn good, but not many songs of his make it into my Floyd Top 20 (plus Dogs and Comfortably Numb are credited to Gilmour/Waters, I think)

Mason ... can't compare to any of his bandmates, IMO.

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

I think I have to go with Waters although I like the personal style of each of the other (except maybe Mason... I can't recall a song that he composed all alone).

RIP in bossa nova heaven.
