I don't think they should be here at all, but there's no doubting they were a great band.

It was mostly due to Uli Jon Roth - he was heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix and the hippie movement, and on Taken By Force you can even hear some (very remote) Krautrock references. But with his departure they turned away from psychedelic towards a more stringent metal sound, with can be heard in its purest form on their 1981 album "Blackout".

You guys probably don't this but the Scorpions are the most influential rock band of all in Malaysia ... from the mid 80s until very recently, there were between 50-100 bands comprising 4 or 5 leather-clad long haired guys with a biker image, but a surprising penchant for mournful ballads ...

Absolutely frightening ... they are huge here! ... my friend had the misfortune (he deserved it I guess) to be caught doing a Nazi impression with Klaus Meine standing right behind him!

I have heard that the first two albums were in a different style ... just like UFO's first two were ...
"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

^ That's a nice summary of their early phase, I agree 100%. Lovedrive is a fascinating album ... Roth had already left the band, but IMO the spirit was still there. From Animal Magnetism onward they established their most popular and successful style, which was then watered down a lot from Savage Amusement and onward.

In the 1970s, in fact up to and including "Lovedrive", they were a very good metal outfit.Yes Lonesome Crow and Fly To The Rainbow hint at psychedelia but not enough to get them a place here.
Taken By Force,In Trance,Virgin Killer all brilliant Hard Rock albums and highly recomended to lovers of 70s Heavy Rock and Tokyo Tapes is a classic live album too.

All their albums with Uli Jon Roth are Prog Related - to a small degree, and IMO not enough to include them. In a way the albums are similar to Wishbone Ash ... with a rougher, more metal sound.

Especially the title track to Lonesome Crow is pure progressive rock. And a true 13 minute masterpiece in my opinion.

Actually I was playing the album 'Fly To The Rainbow' today, and from what I've heard from 'Lonesome Crow', these early albums are a very different beast from the commercial metal fare they did later, with some awesome, almost psychedelic atmospheres. Indeed, to me the track 'Fly To The Rainbow' seems to predict Iron Maiden's work, even if it's less focussed.

I'd not include the band here personally, as for the most part they are a great heavy metal band, though there were definitely elements of prog in their early work. Then again, you'd hear the influence of prog in most 70s artists to be honest...
