Topic: Dos anyone really know who is prog??????? Posted: November 27 2005 at 20:13 |
All i can gather from this site is someone picks an abstract, obscure or doesn't fit into any pigeon hole, then they must be prog. Kate Bush, sings weirdly has sort of long songs, shags a prog guy and hoopla she is prog? Styx, couldn't spell prog, but once again are pronounced prog (or related, some sh*te like that). Where do the keepers of this site get off? Do they kowtow to the North American fascination with prog rock, that they did not invent and have had a miniscule effect on prog rock. Prog rock is European, mainly British (not English as most people would have you believe) is this why our westerly neighbours look askance and jealously add rubbish to these archives.
Since when did a one year old band deserve an archive? Music must have longevity, Dream Theatre doesn't have that nor any other AOR rubbish from the states.
Classical music has longevity, let's have Mozart, Beethoven, Sibelius et al. Nope? Didn't think so, any smart arse comments welcome, but at least i have the balls to speak some real reason.

Kate Bush did not "shag a prog guy" (unless you're referring to Danny McIntosh).
There have been numerous debates on this site as to who or what is prog - I would suggest you check some of them out.
Are you saying that only old European bands can be prog?

Dream Theater have been around since the 80's, not exactly new kids on the block and obviously not a one album wonder. But what is wrong with giving a new band prog status if that's what they are playing- take for example Wobbler of Magic Pie, both only with one release, but both obviously welcome entries to the archive. Give credit where credit is due.
Adding all these other, older and established artists as an after thought, now that's a different matter all together

ohhh now i get it. prog rock is defined by nationality and not so much the music. well that makes it pretty easy. why the hell are we wasting all our time in discussion
and what's with this "north american fascination with prog rock"? i must be living in the wrong area because none of my friends have even heard of progressive rock.
Maybe we should just try being honest for a change. What you really meant to say was, "I have a grudge against america. Now I am going manifest my anger by hating against american bands."
I'm no nationalist and I certainly don't support all the policies of my country, but the real point youre trying to get across is as transparent as glass.

You know my position towards classic Prog', but not everything is black and white:
- Frank Zappa was doing Prog stuff before almost any British band.
- Kansas is in the same level than most of the icons.
- Italian Prog' is at least in the same level as British
- Sweeden made great Prog' when British bands had already dried.
So......???

English is from England, British is from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Obviously there are no great prog bands from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

I don't think longevity is an issue: a progressive band that released an
album last week (irrespective of whether it is a GOOD album) deserves to
be listed here just as much as a band that has issued classic albums for
the last thirty years. But I agree the envelope is being pushed to the
extent where the description "prog" starts to become meaningless.
QUEEN? KATE BUSH? And now an argument to include TALKING HEADS?

To Solaris my signature, if you know anything about music is taken from America by the Nice, abd was spoken by the son of a black American singer......FACT. I didn't say American, i was suggesting that North American bands (that includes Canada) are not forerunners of prog nor have they ever pushed the barriers as far as the European bands.
As for Ivan the nitwit........what are you trying to say????
As for goose, why be bitter of an inferior country, yup nearly all prog bands come from England, but at least we are not hated universally abroad.
Anyway i stand by what i have written, let's include classical prog..................there are plenty to choose from.

The joke you made about STYX not being able to spell would have been really funny if you hadn't misspelled Does.

I'm really confused by how many people don't know the difference between England and Britain. That's akin to not knowing the difference between the US and America .

Does the way we describe music truly matter? Meh... sorry, just not
really a Rolling Stone magazine fan... y'know... everything has to have
its place! f**k off, no it doesn't.

I think the term progressive gets used quite loosley. I do not know how
much energy one should put forth arguing whether a band is prog or not.
I simply think think of prog as odd time changes, unusual song
structures/songwriting, complexity, generally pushing the envelope and
doing things with music that do not follow formulas. I could be wrong
though.
