Topic: First Intro to Prog Posted: November 26 2005 at 05:02 |
Hi All, tell me what were the first prog albums you listened to which got you hooked?
Mine were 'Selling England By The Pound' (Genesis),
'Clutching At Straws' (Marillion) and 'In The Court of the Crimson King (King Crimson)

Well "Selling England by the Pound"...lol what a coincidence. . It's funny that I hadn't listened to much of their stuff until I had got into alot of other prog bands first.
Though the first prog rock albums for me were...I think
Selling England by the Pound
Aqualung
Leftoverture
Fragile

Showing my age here guys but it was The Yes Album, first time I heard
Steve Howe's unique guitar style and Jon Anderson's amazing vocals I
was just totally blown away.
I count myself so lucky yo have been a teenager in the 1970's because
the range of music that came out in those years was stunning week
after week

Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of The Moon" was the first album I got that is widely considered prog (and soon after I got almost all of the albums by Pink Floyd)... but I don't think it was til I discovered Yes (widely influenced by this site, because I read the reviews before buying any albums...) I bought "Classic Yes" (instantly loved all the tracks besides "Wonderous Stories" and the two live versions, although they were okay.)
So, I would say: Dark Side of The Moon led me into more Pink Floyd and Classic Yes led me into more prog all around...

Mine was the platinum hits collection by Genesis. My dad tried to
lend it to me when he bought it and I said, no dad I do not like Phil
Collins. He said, borrow disc 3 then. I did not really listen to it,
got bored after the 30 seconds of each song.
Two years later (last year) I accidentally came across Marillions
Script for a Jesters tear and fell in love with it. Obvoiusly I started
listening to other prog bands, and I went back to Genesi and now I love
Gabriel era songs. Marillion still rule and always will.

For me it was Rush that introduced Prog rock to my ears. My first Rush
album wasnt what I would call Prog Rock (Moving Pictures), but it was
that Album that got me into the group and from that Album I started
from the very beginning with Rush (Slef titled and another non Prog
Rock Album), and then the Prog music began with Carress of Steel. Been
a fan more or less every since.

When I was a kid, my 3 older brothers were into ELP, Yes, Genesis, Kayak etc. I don't know what I heard first. I enjoyed a good education at home
