 Topic: Prog musicians who canīt read music

The first time I heard Toccata on ELPīs Brain Salad Surgery, I was shocked by the way this guys play with time signatures, but then I read in the booklet that Keith Emerson was the only one of them who knew how to read music.
So I donīt know if there are some other prog giants who didnīt know how to read music, which I think is even more impressive. Anybody? |

Yeah, Omar said in many reviews he never learned how to read music but he don't care about that.

I don't know about any prog musicians, but Paul McCartney can't read music and it hasn't exactly held him back.

Or even Ian Anderson? I think they do, but I'm not positive.

Yes, you are wrong, Mr Howe went to a music school...so Im pritty sure he knows how to read...

During Peter's convelence from Genesis, he learnt how to read and write music, Ian Anderson can read and write music.

I'm not so sure about that but I'll have to check it, the only thing I know is that Greg Lake was writing music at the age of 12 (Lucky Man), he made the arrangenents and all the work, I believe it's required a minimum of musical knowledge to do that.
I just found this in the Greg Lake site: In 1968, he formed (with guitar virtuoso Robert Fripp) the experimental King Crimson. The two had been childhood friends and shared the same guitar teacher as pre-teens and teenagers, Don Strike. Greg fronted the innovative King Crimson as lead singer, bassist and co-songwriter.
Sorry. but nobody studies music with a teacher that tutored Robert Fripp without learning to read music, it's simply impossible.
From Carl Palmer official site: Carl Frederick Kendall Palmer was born in Birmingham, England, on March 20th, 1950. From the beginning it was clear that music was in the stars for the young Carl Palmer. His grandfather played the drums, his grandmother was a symphony violinist, his mother played an assortment of instruments, and his father sang, danced and played the guitar and drums as a semi-professional entertainer
For his eleventh birthday he received a new drum set and immediately began to study the instrument. Over the next three years he studied with local instructor Tommy Cunliffe, played in a radio orchestra (the Midland Light Orchestra) and performed with his fathers dance band.
I honestly can't believe he couldn't read music with that background, and I'm almost sure that to play in an orchestra you need to read music.
If that wasn't enough, Carl Palmer worked with Arthur Brown, almost no Professional musician as Brown would hire a guy who can't read music and the arrangements.
And to end,I agree with Royal Jelly, it's almost imposible to re-arrange a Prokofiev work wthout knowing how to read music.

Well I think there might definetely be musicians that have great
technical skill but can't read music that well, yet can have learned
and figured out the concepts of rhythm and timing.

I'm a prog musician (just starting out really though) and while I can rad music and know a fair amount of technical knowledge and theory, I don't really use it much. Perhaps I should though...

They Didn't knew how to read music, ( I read that somewhere, when they recorded atom heart mother suite , Ron Geesin was a bit disapointed because none of the pf member could read these music sheets)..
