They are a commercial group, but in the middle of ´80 they were one of the bands that could survive the massive desturctions of the prog rock due to the pop.

Another point of view.

I find absolutely no evil in it.
It might help spreading the word of Progressive.

Remember, they already had a huge hit with Kayleigh!

I`m no longer concerned what Marillion do they have let me down so many times in the last decade and as far as Marbles goes I fail to see what all the fuss was about, its butt average at best !

Once a great neo progressive band with one of the most charismatic and poetic front man in the buisness  , its sad what can happen when a band loses their identity . Oh bring back Fish !!!

Given this, I think a UK No. 1 is a real possibility.

That's a brilliant article, Si!!!

A brilliant marketing style forced on the band by shoddy record deals. This should be an inspiration to any upcoming band. Now, if only we could see this sort of self marketing success come about from bands that don't already have a huge fan base, the record companies would truly have to re-assess their approach.

Unfortunately the major record labels are aware of these tactics

http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/news/story/0,11711,1593705,00 .html

This piece of dross made it to number one in the UK through downloading and file swapping alone. I don't know or care if it's still there...

Did I mention I've got a track available on Megaupload.com?  (plug, plug...)

Seconded completely. I don't care for their early, high-rated albums (on here, anyway) at all because of that.

Thanks for the link sigod, I knew that Marillion were completely independant but this gives so much detail on HOW. And we know it works as 2 top 20 hits in the UK last year proves.

SELLOUTS!!! I would have been mad if I was a Marillion fan.

If it's a good song, I don't care if they get to number 1.  Though to get to number 1 and be appreciated by the masses, you have to sacrifice most of the things that make your music unique.

More details- where do I find this exactly. The home page only seems to show details about uploading.

Simple - follow this link and wait 45 seconds: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9XU07W5S

er... it's not prog or anything, and this isn't even a proper band... just two guys, a computer and a few keyboards and guitars. We don't even practice...

ENJOY!!!

Nuh, still doesn't work. It looked like it was downloading, but then just hit me with a popup, and nothing played...

It doesn't play from the site.

The timer counts down as the system fetches the file, and the popup appears to advertise some services (one of the problems with a "free" service).

Close the popup, and when the timer finishes, the box will display "Click here to download".

I normally right click this box and choose "Save Target As".

But I tried today and it didn't do that... it just sat there...

Maybe I'll go back to using YouSendIt - I'll try later tonight, as I can't use YouSendIt at work

...apologies for hijacking the thread - I'll post the new link in a more appropriate area

No, to get to number 1 you have to sell more records than anyone else that week, nothing else

Neither was I aware of a top 10 hit last year and I watched Top of the Pops every Friday for comedy value and to see Fearne Cotton...

I'm unfamiliar with Marillion's music (well, I may know something of theirs, but I cannot place anything in my mind), so I do not know if I even like it...

If it's a good single, then fair play to them, but will it be a good single?

They were never given a slot on any of the music shows, just a mention in the chart rundown last april.

All I know about there new single is that the fans are going to ahoot the video for it and that its out next year.

It was my understanding that last year members of Marillion's fanclub had a grassroots agreement that they would buy multiple copies of the singles, artificially inflating the number of copies sold, and in turn causing the band's single to chart more highly than it would have naturally.
