I think I&W is a very commercial sounding album, and with the exception of Metropolis and Learning to Live I am not really crazy about it. | SOOOOOO WHAT??? WHATS THE PROBLEM IF ONE DISC HAVE COMERCIAL MUSIC? THE IMPORTANT THING IS THE QUALITY OF THE MUSIC, IT DOESNT MATTER IF IS POPULAR OR NOT. AFTER ALL, EVERY BAND MADE THEIR DISCS TO SELL, OR NOT????

Commerciality doesn't necessarily mean popular.I think that I&W has a slick commercial sound.I think most of the tunes on the album sounds very AOR-ish.
And I am not a DT hater,I really like DT.I just don't hold I&W in the high esteem you all do.If the DT choice in this poll would have been SFAM it would have gotten my vote.
And there's no need to yell at me dude. You and your damn CAPS.

I hate it when people say things like tool suck and DT rule or the opposit. Ok, I can understand you can't see whats through the music of lateralus because I can't see whats behind I&W but because I cant digest it doesnt mean it doesnt rule!!!

I don't think the sound of Images and Words is all that commercial. You have to remember when Images and Words was recorded, that was 1992. In 1992 we have all of these new inventions of production, especially drums. I don't mind that the snare drum has a triggered sound and etc.
I don't think the variety of the tunes are commercial either. Pull Me Under was a single so we can excuse that, Another Day is a typical short lengthed ballad for Dream Theater. I don't see Another Day any more or less commercial than a ballad like The Spirit Carries On. Take the Time sounds like quite an unconventional funk motifed song to me. Surrounded is cheesey as hell, i give you that one. Metropolis, well of course not. Under a Glass Moon is probably the most metal song on the album. Wait For Sleep is a great introduction to the most progressive track on the album Learning To Live. All in all only 1-2/8 songs are commercial. Plus some production like triggered snare drums.

no, IMO Lateralus could even be called "un-commercial". It's amazing that it also happened to be successful. Few prog albums achieved that ...
