It´s pretty amazing, and one of the reason I´m learning italian just as soon as I finish school this December.

I voted for RDM... but this poll have the same problem that I had in a similar poll that I made last month: too many excellent bands are not mentioned here:

CONSORZIO ACQUA POTABILE

MONTEFELTRO (Attilo Virgilio is one of the best musicians and composers that I've been heard the last years)

LOCANDA DELLE FATE

PICCHIO DAL POZO

I TEOREMI

IL CASTELLO DE ATLANTE

NUOVA ERA

ARIA PALEA

A PIEDI NUDI

ABIOGENESI

LA CORTE DEI MIRACOLI

and many others... But, is really good to know that more and more people are listening Italian Prog Rock... cheers!!

they were a jazz-rock band heavly oriented on experimentation...their music is far from being symphonic.

La Speranza del sentimento è schiavitù
La Speranza del corpo è malattia

I chose "Le Orme" because that group did not change much over the years. PFM and Banco drifted away from prog a little during the 80s.
I bought Locanda Delle Fate's "Forse Le Lucciole Non Si Amano Più" and found it simply BEAUTIFUL.

PICCHIO DAL POZZO was formed in GENOVA in the second half of the seventies. They released their debut album for the GROG label ,VITTORIO DE SCALZI's own company.GROG RECORDS gathered the best local bands around , among them CELESTE surely deserves the most important mention. However -musically in contrast with MANDILLO ,of the same country, (trivial pop) and CELESTE (prog-rock) , PICCHIO DAL POZZO offers a rather fragmentary mix of genres, very close to jazz, rock, and avantgarde music, almost crossover.Their self-titled first work IS DEDICATED TO ROBERTO VIATTI, THAT IS THE GREAT BRITISH MUSICIAN ROBERT WYATT, INSPIRING THEIR STYLE. The keyboards player ALDO DE SCALZI is fondumental in PICCHIO DAL POZZO 's line-up; he's the brother of VITTORIO , famous guitarist of  NEW TROLLS. Several guest musicians take part in the recording sessions for PICCHIO DAL POZZO in 1976: CIRO PERRINO (CELESTE's percussionist) , PUCCI COCHIS (JET's drummer) , and VITTORIO DE SCALZI too, on flute.

In 1980 PDP released their second work titled "ABBIAMO TUTTI I SUOI PROBLEMI" , which is again a successful mix between rock and avantgarde jazz. This time their label is the COOPERATIVA L'ORCHESTRA, a record company formed by STORMY SIX.

Unforfunately PDP disdanded after only 2 albums.

QVL is my fave

but A+M is not symphonic and neither is Picchio Dal Pozzo nor Area

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword
