I've just read on Marillions web site that in the new year Marillion will be releasing a new single and aiming to get their first UK nomber 1 hit to be closely followd by their new album. What I want to know is is this such a good idea. From reading the site, they originolly intended to releas a single next January and that was it but they decided there was no point in building momentum and not doing anything with it so they put back the single releas date so they could produce a new album. I'm worried that this new album could be compromised by the short space of time that they are going to spend on it and also it will be a return to the popier songs of the 90's.

Will they release a single with the only purpose to get them a no 1. hit you mean? SELLOUTS!!! I would have been mad if I was a Marillion fan. |

From reading there site its the intention, and Your Gone was a top ten hit for them only last year. I think there intention might be to get as many of there fans to buy it like last time. It would really make a mockery of the charts if an obscure prog band made it to No1 on the strength of there fan base, witch is considerably smaller than that of pop groups.

If The Band Continuing to Call Itself Marillion wants to become big pop stars, then they can continue on their selling-out path, and use and abuse the good Marillion name. They should have changed to a different name after Fish left in my opinion, then disbanded altogether after a This Strange Engine Farewell Tour. What we have now is just a characture (sic?) of their former self...

Go for it, Marillion! If an artist says he/she/they do not care about making money, they do not care about living! It's a captalist society and has been for a little while... It's not selling out, it's cashing in - I doubt very much that the next Marillion album will be geared towards the pop audience. |

Jesus, I don't give a damn if they release a single just get to no 1 - I'd just love to see them get the commercial success they deserve and put prog on top again. I'm sick of talentless rappers and manufactured boy and girl bands, useless "rock" bands (did anyone see Babyshambles on Jools Holland; was a band ever more aptly named?) dominating the charts. Go for it boys!! |

Yes, I've heard Kayleigh many times on a radio. Well, I don't like Marillion though |

I like Jools but i turned that episode off, it was rubbish. Like I said before, as long as Marillion continue their upward swing that they started in Marbles, then I'll be one of the fans that supports them, but only i they avoid becoming another pointless pop band. |

I will be surprised if Marillion hit no.1 on chart, even in England. I
wish I am wrong.. but.. I have that doubt since the singer is not that
great.

All it depends on is how many fans they have and the timing of the release, they could but i doubt it. |

Well, they had a top 10 hit with the last one - and they didn't try too hard. That really made the Record industry sit up and take notice - that an "old" and "irrelevant" band like Marillion could force their way into the precious charts without going through the machine (and generating loads of money for it). So I hope Marillion can do it again, only bigger and better - and give the record industry another slap. The world needs bands like Marillion - and Radiohead - remember that the latter offered "Kid A" for FREE download BEFORE they released it. EMI/Parlophone nearly had kittens! Only through this approach can the stranglehold of the industry be broken, and music be allowed to be free (ie, it's popular because people like it, not because it's forced down their throats).

Might have been a rant Certif1ed but it was a good one. Why do members here think it is a bad thing for bands to try a bit of commercialism? And don't forget I put up a thread, a while back, that compared the future of Marillion to the path Genesis took.

I don't mind a bit of commercialism but getting a No 1 Single doesn't
have the same cachet or sales as it used to, say when Kayleigh was a
hit for them. Still if it gets them airplay that helps sell the album,
go for it!!

I dont pay any attention to the charts these days at all, so I missed Marillion having a hit last year. It doesn't help that I dont follow Hogart era Marillion either, I guess Do they sell all their music on line?? If so, did they attain that hight chart position with on line sales alone, or was the single also available in the shops?? If Marillion can have hits, that can only be a good thing...however they do it! |

They've always struck me as staunchly commercial in their sound anyway. Their "prog" work sounds more like "epic pop" than anything. I don't see why some Marillion fans are so livid about such a popular and commercial act aiming for number 1.

Marillion have a huge and I do mean HUGE, fanbase (at the last count,
about 250,000 worldwide) considering that they record and release the
albums themselves with little or no marketing.
For more information on the 'Marillion Business Model', see the link below. It might astound you. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/sep03/articles/marillion.htm Given this, I think a UK No. 1 is a real possibility. ![]() |
