Marillion going for No1

I've just read on Marillions web site that in the new year Marillion will be releasing a new single and aiming to get their first UK nomber 1 hit to be closely followd by their new album.

What I want to know is is this such a good idea. From reading the site, they originolly intended to releas a single next January and that was it but they decided there was no point in building momentum and not doing anything with it so they put back the single releas date so they could produce a new album. I'm worried that this new album could be compromised by the short space of time that they are going to spend on it and also it will be a return to the popier songs of the 90's. 

 

From reading there site its the intention, and Your Gone was a top ten hit for them only last year. I think there intention might be to get as many of there fans to buy it like last time. It would really make a mockery of the charts if an obscure prog band made it to No1 on the strength of there fan base, witch is considerably smaller than that of pop groups.

If The Band Continuing to Call Itself Marillion wants to become big pop stars, then they can continue on their selling-out path, and use and abuse the good Marillion name.  They should have changed to a different name after Fish left in my opinion, then disbanded altogether after a This Strange Engine Farewell Tour.  What we have now is just a characture (sic?) of their former self...

If an artist says he/she/they do not care about making money, they do not care about living!

It's a captalist society and has been for a little while...

It's not selling out, it's cashing in - I doubt very much that the next Marillion album will be geared towards the pop audience.

Yes, I've heard Kayleigh many times on a radio. Well, I don't like Marillion though

I will be surprised if Marillion hit no.1 on chart, even in England. I wish I am wrong.. but.. I have that doubt since the singer is not that great. 

Well, they had a top 10 hit with the last one - and they didn't try too hard.

That really made the Record industry sit up and take notice - that an "old" and "irrelevant" band like Marillion could force their way into the precious charts without going through the machine (and generating loads of money for it).

So I hope Marillion can do it again, only bigger and better - and give the record industry another slap.

The world needs bands like Marillion - and Radiohead - remember that the latter offered "Kid A" for FREE download BEFORE they released it.

EMI/Parlophone nearly had kittens!

Only through this approach can the stranglehold of the industry be broken, and music be allowed to be free (ie, it's popular because people like it, not because it's forced down their throats).

I don't mind a bit of commercialism but getting a No 1 Single doesn't have the same cachet or sales as it used to, say when Kayleigh was a hit for them. Still if it gets them airplay that helps sell the album, go for it!!

They've always struck me as staunchly commercial in their sound anyway. Their "prog" work sounds more like "epic pop" than anything. I don't see why some Marillion fans are so livid about such a popular and commercial act aiming for number 1.
