Black Sabbath is just hard rock songs which revolves around one riff and simplistic song builups and standard time signatures...i dont understand how on earth they suddenly are so proggy

Albums like Sabotage, Master of Reality, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Technical Ecstasy all had prog elements to them. I would agree that they were just hard rock at the core, but they had their thoughtfull and innovative moments.
I would say that an album like Sabotage is more prog than any Metallica I've heard, although I'd say Metallica have the upper hand as musicans.

There's definitely an argument for the Stranglers to be considered under the 'Art Rock' category for some of their mid-period albums - I've always thought they were The Doors with attitude, anyway

The Doors - No (Blues) I agree
Coldplay - Thats got to be a joke.. Its a good long shot?
I would support the inclusion of Black Sabbath and The Who above the above mentioned. That doesn't mean I dont like those bands.

Ok, I'm out of touch with XTC. I lost interest after English Settlement (I like that album, and have re-visited it recently) and by the time I heard the Mayor of Simpleton, I knew I'd moved on.
What sort of music was Echo & the Bunnymen? I always heard them as alt/indie/semi goth and emerging from the new wave scene at the end of the 70's/early 80's. Were they not?? I've certainly never regarded them as prog or prog related.

Im my opinion the New Wave scene was done and dusted by the time Echo came around, I agree with your other comments on them though, and ..no..they are not prog related! ....well, maybe at a stretch!
Just checked up about them and they were very much around at the time of New Wave, but it says this about them
Crocodiles established the band in the forefront of the neo-psychedelic movement then sweeping Northern England.
Closer to prog than you thought maybe?

Groundhogs eh? I think they were more blues than prog, mind you Split was a great concept album and I seem to remember Thank Christ For the Bomb being quite proggy.
Interesting story about Groundhogs (well, vaguely). When I was in a band in about 1986, we had a Welsh drummer and we all trekked down to stay the night at his place. On the Saturday evening he took us down to his local club (which was a bit like a working men's club) as he said there was usually a band playing there. Anyway, we went and the band turned out to be Tony McPhee and Groundhogs. Shame they never quite made it big.
