All of this discussion made me think of Reefer Madness. If you haven't already seen it, watch it. That crazy piano sequence is hilarious! And its all because of the evil epidemic of marijuana... classic laughably closeminded, fear-mongering propoganda!

I am an advocate of across the board drug legalization, only because I don't believe the government should be in that business, not because I advocate drug use. That being said, I really enjoy a doobie or two here and there. Anyone can tell a horror story about drug use, but without sounding too crude, government legislation will not stop people from harming themselves, drug wise or other wise. The War On Drugs is an overfunded crock: Spend that money that you would spend procecuting and incarcerating people on treatment programs: You will save money and do better in the long run. The fact is that politicians come out against drugs because it makes good press, not because it makes good sense.

You certainly don't need any drugs to enjoy prog but I agree that it can enhace an individuals experience.  For me a few beers and a joint and it's time to put on Supper's Ready for a bit of a sing along.

If this happened, then the madness was inside him beforehand  and it probably would've happened anyway , smoking up or not!!!

But Smoking up surely did not arrange his severe mental problems , that is for sure.

I sereously think you're brother OR has taken something else (and reduced it to "weed" ) OR was SEREOUSLY overreacting OR tought that in the very first place..

I think he took some mushrooms or something..

No it is not bullsh*t, recent research has shown that marijuana can unleash psychosis in those who are prone to it, and it has a very bad effect on those who have already gone through an episode of psychosis. I think he did try shrooms once or twice, but that was long before the breakdown. Like I said, it wasn't the only factor and he was also going through a depression at the time, but it was very, very bad for him and I think that if he hadn't been smoking a lot could have been avoided, maybe the entire illness. He has spent an entire year in a mental hospital and two months in prison, so this is no laughing matter.

The BBC does not have a reputation for being biased as far as I can tell. I don't doubt that smoking weed in moderation will keep you pretty safe, but when you become a heavy user problems start. And I'm sure you can understand why I choose not to touch that stuff. That was the most stressful summer of my life, and I could have ended up without a father. Any substance that is powerful enough to do that is not something that I want to mess with.

I had a friend who has had a similar experience with weed.  He was freaking out, so we shut him in a room all by himself.  If anyone entered the room when he was still high, he would just attack not realizing what he was doing or who he was doing it to.

I've never had a bad experience with marijiuana myself.  I find the high to be nothing but relaxing and tranquil.  When i'm on a high things are much easier to do, and I don't mind doing stuff i find to be unfavorable as much.

Wow, some of your responses are extremely disappointing, people. The lack of compassion for Biggles' experience is very disturbing to me.

Biggles, for what it's worth, I had a similar experience to yours - a good friend and former bandmember had several psychotic breaks some years ago, and has now been diagnosed with schizophrenia. Thankfully for us, it didn't result in the type of violence your family experienced.

He's doing much better now, as I hope your brother will. He says now that simply knowing what his illness is makes it much more manageable.

I would like to point out a few things about the links you sent:

"Professor John Henry, clinical toxicologist at Imperial College London said research had shown that people with a certain genetic makeup who use the drug face a ten times (1000%) higher risk of schizophrenia."

"Professor Castle, author of the book Marijuana and Madness, said those with this "psychotic proneness" were those who had a family history of mental illness or who had had a bad response on their first use of cannabis or to a tiny amount."

I do agree with the synopsis that use of cannabis during the formation years can increase the _risk_, but it's not quite a foregone conclusion that it directly results in the affliction.

I just hope our understanding of schizophrenia improves anough so that we can better detect genetic predispositions in the future.

^ well come on .. I mean talking about a family problem like that on an Internet Forum is not really the place to talk about it ... considering the lack of reactions..I actually find it better like that... But I must admit, it sucks what happened and everything... 

And by the way, people who got schizoprenia because of drugs... they ALREADY HAD IT.. it wouldve appeared eventually even if they havent smoked or taken any drugs.

Rubbish, in most cases i know of the drug was the catalist or even the cause due to the change that it does make to the brain.

OK its not by smoking a joint that schizophrenia is gonna enter your brain... Someone who smokes and gets schizophrenia. its because he already had the potential... and well cannabis (why am i even saying cannabis, cannabis is RARE for those cases... LSD lets say) and the LSD just made it come out earlier then it wouldve .. like syd barrett... he would of had schizoprenia later, LSD just made it come out earlier.
