I voted for the Flower Kings, but it was a tough choice between them and King Crimson for me.  Frankly, I don't think of most of those other bands as really making instrumental music, except ELP (which I like, but not as well as Crimson and TFK).  And to be fair, I only have on Anglagard disc (which I don't really like) and I don't know anything by Mahivishnu.

A good idea for a topic ... but where's Ozric Tentacles?  Camel?  Djam Karet?  Even Liquid Tension Experiment?!?
I repeat myself when under stress.

How come Crimson is losing this poll by a mile? Must be the people sitting
and reloading to have their favorite band win. I mean let's be honest here,
Genesis has almost 700 votes and KC has 130? A third of Crimson's albums
are usually instrumental while Genesis has had about 3 their whole career
(Gabriel-era.) They can't even be compared.

My thoughts exactly.

This multi vote polls are useless, better to write your opinions:

  1. Anglagard: Nuff said
  2. Par Lindh Project: Also love when Magdalena sings
  3. Focus: Only one or two strange versions of songs with lyrics, Thijs used his voice as an instrument.
  4. Mike Oldfield
  5. Jean Luc Ponty

Iván

BTW: As Fragile DT well said, it's a crime to mention ELP and Genesis, Greg Lake's voice is incredible and Genesis sung material is far superior to their instrumentals.

I should really check out Focus. I've only heard good things about them.
Anyone recommend a good starting point?

If you want solid albums:

  1. Hamburger Concerto
  2. Moving Waves

I ususally avoid compilations, but there's one called Hocus Pocus, which gives a good panoramic view of the band.

If you want a full Focus experience, try the DVD named Masters from the Vault

You'll enjoy it and it's cheap.

Iván

What about Ozric Tentacles? They're 100% instrumental.

I'm also very keen on Derek Sherinian these days (also 100% instrumental) and Liquid Tension Experiment are also great (also 100% instrumental).

I voted for ANGLAGARD... really accurate and technical, maybe one of the best bands of the 90's... I really love Yes, ELP, Crimson and Genesis but I think Anglagard in this list, is the best insrtumental band... You forget Camel, Porcupine Tree, Anekdoten and Happy Family, but well... the poll is OK...
