5 stars   Again, the word neo in the introduction, wat a lot of cr&*&p, pardon my french. If you listen to Saga for the first time it's an album that will blow you away. Musicaly one of the best albums in the last years. If you are a die hardfan from the first album, like I am, than you have to think that they are on the way back to being one of the best progbands ever. There are a few weak albums, but the flame keeps burning to buy more. And this one is one to have. Nice sound effects, but the guitarho*&y, pardon again, should buy something else and never visit this page again. If you like guitars go look for the solo albums from Ian Crichton, if you like good songwriting than buy the latest from M. Sadler, but don't dismiss this one.....one to have. I will give it 5 stars to boost the average.

1 stars   Scientists around the world should quit researching stuff like genetic engineering and come up with a proper explanation of why this album is so (annoyingly) popular. I like Floyd - they don't have the musicianship of bands like Genesis, but I can see what people like about The Wall, Wish You Were Here, even Division Bell. However , I cant see anything special about "Dark Side..." at all. Maybe they cover every CD, vinyl or cassette copy with some hallucinogenic substance that makes everyone a fan upon contact (which would explain why I don't like it as I have a burned copy). Seriously, almost nothing about this album interests me : not the music (the songs are very simplistic, usually based on some common chord progression that lasts throughout the track), nor the concept (we all know war and money is evil, get over it). The only stuff that kept my attention was "Us and Them" ( nice sax solo by Dick Perry) and a couple metaphors in the lyrics I liked. And did I mention this ain't even prog?
 
 
This is a dreadful review - and treads a fine line, as it does pass an opinion on the album - but only just.
 
Mostly it's a complaint about the album - a forum post rather than a review of the music.
 
I vote it gets deleted.
 
And you're wrong, Pafnutj - it IS very much a Prog album. Complexity and chord progressions have nothing to do with Prog, and the concept is sooo much deeper than you have realised.
 
You don't have to like it, just come up with a real review of the music, not a blasting based on your misunderstandings

I did take a good look at that PF review. Although I disagree with the contents (that of course is not the point) I reckoned it says enough about the album to remain.

Agree with you, Bob!

Just because we do not agree with what is aid in the review does not mean his point of view is invalid. He means no obvious disrespect and is actually funny in downing the album.

2 stars  —  I usually agree with Hugues' reviews and this is no exception! It must be said finally loud and clear that many of our beloved prog bands occasionally produced crap albums and totaly uninspired works. YES is no exception and as one of previous reviews noted well, this album is perhaps a good example why some music lovers hate progressive rock. Double LP of boring, quasi-philosophical "space" trips with lots of pompose and over- grandiose music solos, lacking basic emotions needed to intrigue the listener. I already stated in "CTTE" review that if it was a peak of their career it also announced a downfall to the arena of showmanship of "rock dinosurus", which created some of the most empty and self-indulgent music in the world and invoked the coming of the "punk saviours"! Granted, YES produced even worse albums than "Topographic" (see "Tormato"), but here it all started. I could personnaly listen only to some parts of "Ritual" without the urge to approach the turntable , lift up the cartridge, take the record, place it back into the sleeve, put it on the shelf and forget about it forever. If you are a newbie into prog, avoid this. Listen to the first five albums and if you get yourself addicted to YES then you may wish to complete your collection with this one. 1,5-2 stars.

1 stars  —  One star is only for the reasons that you will read in next few words. .For those who really like prog music in the true meaning of this genre of art, this definitely is not prog. If you search for hard rock, metal deviations, some experimental stuff, maybe you will find this enjoyable, but if you look for true prog music (at least neo prog) please listen to something else. Even in metal prog you could find music that could be compared to the old masters of prog, (Dream Theater, Liquid Tension experiment, Karmakanic, Ayreon, etc.....) but Tools are not in this stream. Be sure of this. Hope I am being helpful advising you not to spend money and time in something that at last you will not like. Take only the time to listen to a sample of them and you will understand. This comment is valid in the same way for Radiohead that is simply Brit pop with quite good musicians and good ideas but nothing more then this
 
 
      WHAT? im not really a tool fan and a very new member but i think most of u can see why this review NEEDS to be taken out. All it is a big explanation on why tool isnt prog, no review and a one star as well.
