 Topic: How do you first listen to albums?

I usually listen to music on my computer while I'm browsing through forums. When I first get an album, if it's something particularly difficult, I sometimes put it on the computer and let it sink into the background and play it about 3 times like this just so my subconscious soaks the melodies in, and then I play it and devote my attention to it and I understand it better. That's what I did with Pat Metheny's "The Way Up." When you've got a 60-minute composition with heavy jazz influence and a lot of improvisation, that's a good way to approach it.

Usually, I'll listen to a bit of one of the albums I buy on the way
home. Then I listen to albums in their entirety, one by one,
almost exclusively when I work out. I'll go downstairs, put on a
CD or vinyl, and let it play while I exercise. When I'm on the
computer I prefer to open winamp and let it run through a random
selection. Most of the stuff I haven't listened to already are my
dads albums that I've ripped to try out.

This is pretty much what I do, too, except I don't listen to the CD's on my computer but on my stereo -and ALWAYS, always with headphones. I've grown so used to them that I can´t really listen to music without them any longer. I prefer the music, especially music that I've yet to hear, to be as near as possible to my ears, it feels much more intimate that way.
There are some records that I try to give that first listen to while lying in my bed, all relaxed and yet fully attentive to the music I am about to hear. This is the case if I have very high hopes for the record in question.
There are at least two records which I gave a first listen to while going out for a walk; CTTE and Octobus. I figured the walking, surrounded by some nice scenery, would help me to get through what I believed would be rather weird music

I wait at night till everyone is off to bed. Then I sit at my computer, slide the disc in, slip on the Sennheisers and wish the world goodbye. You can knock on my door, pound on my window, ring me on the phone till the ringy-dingy wears off: I’m there for no one.
Oh, how I  these magic moments.

Back when there was a prevalence of vinyl, I would always listen to
side two first! Always! Just my way. CD's sure changed that.

Preferably, alone in a pitch black room. But more often, since I have
so much to listen to, it winds up being on the go via mp3 player or
laptop.

I've done that, but I'm a little worried about waking the
Neighbours. Being unemployed, I have the house to myself during
the day, so I can play CDs pretty loud. But I really want to
listen to them in a dark room, no lights..., particularly ITCOTCK,
Lark's Tongues In Aspic or Pawn Hearts with all their weird sounds.

Best time is when I'm the only person in the house ... the player in my living room ...
doesn't happen too often ... so alone, late at night, softer than I'd like it to be ... is the more common answer

Off topic:
I've downloaded the two demo tracks but I haven't even played them yet,
so I'm taking a risk, but it's not the first time I've done so, I did
the same with a Colosseum Anthology and that turned out great, I don't
have any bad prog in my collection.
Is White Willow more folk based than Wobbler? Any recommendations
on which album to get? Baring in mind Amazon are rubbish...,
there is so much prog I can't get my hands on, it's driving me crazy!
Back on topic:
Playing it in the car is great fun, I find I hear a lot more.

On the stereo in the lounge. I would play it through headphones,
but I've broken them (only one speaker seems to work properly).
If I like the music, I will probably play it again the next day, or it
has been known straight after the first listen. I really want to
play Comus, the first CD of the Song To Comus 2-CD set (featuring the
album "First Utterance" is just sublime) again, I'm addicted!
Having said that, I have Pawn Hearts in the care at the moment and it
sounds great, but I'm not going for a drive at this time of
night! Has anyone taken a car ride just to listen to their music
collection? It's good fun, except when it's raining or cold and
the wipers or heater drown the music out.
I don't have the best car speakers in the world (in fact, they are the
ones that came with the car), but the compactness of the sound is great
and I can get peace there and no interruptions (except from other
drivers).
Can't wait to hear Wobber - "Hinterland" it should arrive later in the week.
