In 1973 I was in Paris with my school class. There I bought "Sellling Enland by the pound" in shop close to Boulevard St. Michel. I didn't know by then but nowI know that I bought one of my most loved albums of my life. - I  went home, sat down in our cellar (made up for parties) and listened in total darkness to that strange music. I was overwhelmed. This is  30 years ago. Paris-Genesis-Youth. This was  and is my choice.
YES - Close to the edge / UK - UK / GENESIS - The lamb lies down / KING CRIMSON - Discipline / MIKE OLDFIELD - Tubular bells / JETHRO TULL - Aqualung / GENTLE GIANT - Three friends / TMO - IMF

Who said anything about buy?

Almost just kidding, I bought Ayreon's The Human Equation DVD/CD set at Best Buy. Some jerkoff had pushed the CD into the slot and the sides were bent, but I got the last copy and for about $10 cheaper than I should have!

You see...

...there's this mainstream CD place in this mainstream mall in my city that consistently has remastered prog epics that I haven't heard yet. Last time I was there I found randomly (and picked up) Gentle Giant's 35th Anniversary Edition of In a Glass House (certainly one of my favourites). The guy who sold it to me said his coworker had had his eye on it and was going to buy it soon since he didn't think anyone would take it.

It's all very odd. I would never expect this place (it's an HMV, for god's sakes!) to have the kind of stuff that it actually does have. It doesn't even make geographic sense - the mall's in an area of the city that's very young and tends to be more interested in rap and hip-hop.

My first buying was Atom Heart Mother and Meddle in 1972 (I bought both at the same time), in a small shop near home. It was there that I bought on May, 2nd, 1973, the best prog-album IMO: Foxtrot. I don't know why I wrote the date in the cover and it is still there.

Hmm, the VdGG remasters I got from SpinCDs.  The originals (well, Aerosol, The Least We Can Do, H To He and Still Life) I got from Amazon.

Red and Lark's Tongue I got from Virgin Megastore and ITCOTCK is a copy of my brother's CD, but I really should get an original some time...

Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed I got from HMV and they have a lot of Moody Blues CDs, which is great.

JT - Aqualung - probably HMV again.

I wish I had a more exciting story to tell.

I bought Close to the Edge on vinyl in June 1976, in a record shop in Hertford of which there were two at the time - "Odils" (otherwise known as Dildo's, of course) or "Tracks". I'd like to think it was Tracks because that was the smaller, independent store, which carried on for many years...sadly finally to close earlier this year....

To change subject slightly, I have very clear memory of waiting for the release of and then going out and buying two particular albums...Yes , Going for the One in Summer 1977; and Donald Fagen's (of Steely Dan) album "The Nightfly" in 1982, both from Tracks! Ah nostalgia.......

Most of my early purchases such as CTTE, ITCOTCK, Tubular Bells, Moodies etc would have been in either Callers or Virgin in Newcastle.

Not sure what my favourite ever album is - it changes too much. Probably CTTE for longevity, so see above!

Phil - the Tracks in Ware has gone as well - now a hairdressers

I haveover 800 vinnyl lps. bought them all but about 20 in am shopcalled caper's corners. it was the record store of the 60's-early 60's in my home town of Kansas City. Now i split time time looking in the supoerstores like border's, hastings, and Barnes and nobel. I also hit the used CD warehouse and pawn shops.

When I can not find anyting i go amazon and Overstock.

I sure miss that old shop. I wase good freinds aith the qowner and he would always hold back good lps and the best seats for the big time concerts for me. Hegoy me front row center for Supertramp Crime of the century, also same for Yesgoing for the one tour and Tulls warchild tour
