Topic: The 3 lives of Genesis Posted: November 16 2005 at 15:20 |
As we all know, Genesis had 3 different sound periods, which I'll call "Phase I (Quintet)", Phase II (Quartet), and "Phase III (Trio). I wanna know what your favorite Genesis phase is. I'll give you mine.
1. Phase I
2. Phase II
3. Phase III

Maybe the "New poll" button isn't obvious enough.
Anyway, I think there's going to be a pretty standard answer for most people. Same for me.

Mine too I, II, III
But, to be more specific, I like them best in their late fase I and then in their early fase III albums. Then early fase I, fase II and the least favorite is late fase III .

I believe there are more ´phases because FGTTR also existed and Trespass has a different formation than in the classic years, but lets do it your way:
- Phase I
- Phase II
The rest is simply not Genesis.

I - Brilliant prog rock
II - Still maintains a high level of quality
III - Excellent pop rock (compared to the stuff you normally hear on the radio)
It's all good to me.

Wow these results are astonishing! People on the 'PROG archives' like
Gabriel-era Genesis the most? With a couple exceptions for the less-liked
but still respected post Gabriel days when Hackett was still around?
What a useless thread. I was suckered in for my love of Genesis.

I wouldn't necessarily agree with the original poster's assessment of 3 phases. I think the problem here is that the phases are judged on numbers in personnel rather than the way Genesis' music has developed/changed over the years.
From Genesis to Revelation was a million miles from Trespass in terms of sound/production etc and 6 members were actually listed as playing on this album. The period from Nursery Cryme to The Lamb could be classed as the most progressive phase in the band's history.
I would class the Trick of the Tail & Wind and Wuthering period as a "mini phase" as I think both albums compliment each other perfectly and they could have easily been put together as a double package - this was when David Hentschel got involved on the production side, too.
Maybe the next 2 albums (And Then There Were Three and Duke) could be classed together as they were the last ones Hentschel worked on and aren't as user friendly as the later releases when Hugh Padgham started engineering the band.
