This is hard...because I really cant say I like one style over the other...but as I have heard more things with Collins, and his work in Islands is great, Ill go with him...

Ian's work on ITCOTCK and Red is great. I haven't heard much of Mel Collins' work though, but what I have heard is great too.

I also went for mcDonald for his songwriting and his KB works,
although I think Collins was a better intrumentist but only with sax and Flutes (no KB)

let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword

A question...both McDonald and Collins play the sax in Red...but I never knew who it is in every song...could somebody help me please? I want to know who is responsable for that excellent sax solo in Starless and who for that solo in One more red nightmare...which I dont really like that much

For Starless, it's Mel on soprano sax for the opening mournful
mellotron section, then Ian comes in on alto when the band picks up the
pace... they both play together for the theme at the end(recorded at
different times though).
Ian also plays the One More Red Nightmare solo's.
