Topic: Marijuana enhances ProgRock Posted: November 15 2005 at 15:35 |
Just seeing if anyone else agrees or disagrees with that statement. I loved progrock and music as a whole way before i started occasionally using psychadelic drugs, but once i tried marijuana and listened to Meddle by Pink Floyd for the first time, I realized how much marijuana enhances music. It allows you to hear things that you cannot normally hear. Bands like Amon Duul II, Ash Ra Tempel, Pink Floyd, Camel, Ozric Tentacles, Gong, Soft Machine etc. were all meant to be heard under the influence. Anyone feel the same way?

What is with all the drug topics lately?
And NO...I don't feel the same way.
You shouldn't need drugs to enhance the pleasure of listening to prog(or any music for that matter)

I understand what you mean, and I've experienced the same thing... that is I _would_ have, had I inhaled!
That being said, I agree with the Progtologist, in that you don't NEED
drugs to appreciate those details you find yourself noticing... it's
just a matter of training your attention span to listen for those
details when you're not altering your brain chemistry. You're already
listening to Prog, so you're on the right track!

I did not mean "meant to be heard" just that the musicians themselves were and that it gives new meaning and perspective on the whole piece of music.
Progtologists:
You are a Tool fan yourself, you are missing out. Marijuana is not a drug. As demonstrated in the legalization of marijuana in Denver, Colorado, Marijuana is less harmful than alcohol. Marijuana promotes the growth of brain cells as noted in a new study at Standford Univeristy. It has been shown to be one of the most useful plants on this Earth! Of course you wouldn't know a thing about that would you?

P.S. If you were aware or not... Danny Carey, Maynard James Keenan, Justin Chancellor, and Adam Jones are all frequent marijuana users and huge Tim Leary advocates.

I don't think you're right one bit..
Camel? Should be heard under drug influence? Only if Andy Latimer had heard it.. I doubt he will be able to move his face muscles after 5 minutes..
Instead of worrying and listing bands whom you think are ought to be heard under drug influence, you'd better start questioning your drug use and stop being influenced by your pathetic friends.
Just a tip there.. not that give a f**k or anything..

you see. marijuana makes you aware of this phenomenon called "time"... that is why time seems like its going so SLOOOOW and you cet caught in "time loops" sometimes. (when youre really stoned)
that is because it widens your consciousness... It is damn right, we are aware of things we wouldnt be aware of sober... for a man who wants a good job in society. and live with money, dont go in drugs. you probably always will have a bad idea about it.. but if your goal is to find things out about the universe. hek man. Psychedelia awaits you...

Your country harvests more marijuana than any other country in the world.

Pope announces his support for Catholicism - bears spotted defecating in woodland area - David Beckham discovered to be moderately unintelligent!!!!!!!!!!
There's no doubt that a spliff will make music sound more interesting (especially if you smoke it)(somke the spliff that is) but it's hardly essential - I was well into prog well before I discovered the wonders of weed, and find it easier to get into King Crimson and Magma without the assistance of THC. You've got a point where Ozrics and Gong are concerned though.

I grew a lot of marijuana in my time, and smoked bud every single day from the time I was 13 till I was 25.
So don't patronize me and treat me like I don't know anything about weed.

damn man. i love you erpland, finally a smart guy... everyone seems to hate marijuana and mush and LSD because of the image it has received throughout the years... and EVERY ONE who seems to not like those substances are 1.people who have never tried it .. you ask them WHY they dont wanna try. and theyll NEVER find a good answer. 2. people who once consumed, and got scared of their effects... believing that theyd become insane, so they let all their experiences behind. and now say "man, i got out of the dark world of drugs"..
finally that world is not so dark once youre in it... But there are dumb drug users. like those gangsters who smoke for the image, or sniff for the pride... But not all stoners are idiots... I'd say, they must be the wisest men on this planet.

Firstly, how does that demonstrate that it's less harmful than alcohol? Is alcohol illegal there? Does Denver have some inherent superiority over as far as I know every other legal jurisdiction in the world?
Secondly I thought it was decriminalised, not legalised. I may be wrong on that one.

If you think it's easier to think after smoking grass, your brain must be way too frazzled to act as a spokesman

Its just about people being closeminded because of what our fellow friends in the white house drill into society's brain! Oh well there are the herders and the sheep!

I quit when my first child was born.
I don't hate it,it's just not for me anymore.I was constantly stoned for over a decade and it just got old.I was so tired of being high that when I quit, being straight and clear-headed felt awesome.

Yeah, moderation is key. Which is something you don't understand until you reach a certain age.

I took cannabis and other drugs at university - i dont need them to make music more enjoyable - in my case drugs were a rite of passage - they are NOT essential for musical appreciation
AFTER hearing some bands i sometimes feel in NEED of medication (prescribed drugs)

Maybe 'cause there's a point when it becomes an adiction, then it's
when the harmful consequences start... but that's just me, an ignorant
adolescent.
Personally I'm curious about weed. I haven't tried it but IMO you don't
need drugs to enhance the experience of listening music.

Cannabis enhances most things pleasurable , but Progtologist is right, you shouldn't need it to enjoy music.
I've found that as I've got older - and quit the weed - I enjoy the music just as much, but perhaps for different reasons. I've spent enough time stoned off my t!ts lying on the floor melting away to the Ozrics, or early Genesis, but I usually settle for a beer now....or a nice cup of tea!
That said, if anyone offers me anything in the near future, I've been dying to drown in Topographic oceans again...just one more time.....just for old times sake..

yea, maybe you didnt consume it wisely...smokin weed everyday... after a while you dont have a reason to keep going, cause well. you are always stoned. But there are people who use nature's plants (like shamans) who make great use of them. like a peyote meeting per month, to learn things and think about the meaning of life. It is just a tool to access parts of life that we cannot access sober. (weed is not really that kinda drug though). but i respect the fact that you quit after your first child... Hek I most likely will do that too... But I will never say "drugs are bad, they do this to you. bla bla bla." when im old. ( I know its not your case but.)
