To make harmony out of discord requires great skill and I think that you have to understand a bit about music to appreciate that!

PFM, VdGG, and Caravan are also good. But out of the ones I've discovered from this forum, Focus is my favorite.

I heard of them but never heard them, and then due to a thread in the Lounge I went out and bought Hamburger Concerto.
What an excellent album

I
have discovered the site about 18 months ago. It has really changed my
life (not kidding). Even if some critics are not alays accurate (or at
least does not correspond to my taste, but after all this is democracy
so let's keep on progging) it is a brilliant source of information;
To name the bands I have discovered would be too long to describe (there must be about 500 or so).
Just to mention that I have appreciated bands in the so-called neo-prog
or symphonic style. Some of them souding like early Genesis (Citizen
Cain, Neuschwanstein, Galadriel, The Watch, The Night Watch, Shaun
Gerin, Iluvatar, Rael, Mangal Vallis, and K2. This is pure nostalgia
for me and unlike some venerable reviewers of this site (désolé
Hughes), I have nothing against bands sounding like Genesis mark 1.
They are just good. Period.
A part from that I discovered what is called here neo-prog and my faves
are IQ, Arena, Pendragon. Ones of the discoveries though, were Flower
Kings and Kaipa (and actually most of the Roine Stolt side projects -
although Transatlantic is not really my cup of tea). What a great
composer he is. Cast (Mexican band) was also a marvellous discovery for
me. A few other ones :
Land's End, La Mascherra di Cera, Hostsonaten, Ars Nova, Aether,
Sylvan, Xang, Visible Wind, RPWL, Versailles, Saens, Triana, Ñu,
T3nity, Tempus Fugit, Tako, Sylvan, Riverside, Ricocher, Pulsar, Puppet
Show, Porcupine Tree, Orphan Project, Ken's Novel, Odyssice, No Name,
Museo Rodenbach, Mostly Autumn, Minotaurus, Magenta, Malibran, Locanda
Delle Fate, Like Wendy, Liquid Scarlet, Landmarq, La Torre
Dell'Alchimista, KNIGHT AREA (really a great Dutch band . Saw them live
in September during the prog convention in Verviers, belgium - Spirit
of 66 of course), Jadis, Il Trono Dei Ricordi, Ibio (Spanish band,
incredible), Fruupp, Galleon, Fruitcake (althoug I do not really like
the singer), For Absent Friends, Forgotten Suns (great Portugese band),
Flame dream, Eloy, Doracor, Chance, Caféine, Atoll.
This list is far from being exhaustive.
Thanks to this site, I could finally buy me a stairway to heaven ...

I haven't discovered many bands here that I want to hear,
what I've heard of Dream Theater, Marillon, Spock's Beard, etc.
just strikes me as rehashing of the original progressive rock. I
ordered Guapo based on several eloges in these pages, and
found it rather boring and blown-up. I did find some leads to
discover some good albums by artists I already know, also
through the reviews, and did discover Absolute Zero, who I find
really wild and fresh.
