Topic: żOverrated?... Posted: November 14 2005 at 09:44 |
So many people posting this "Overrated something" comments... I like many many albums, and really don't care about wether the world has recognize that album to be the ultimate poetic expression of a genre or not. If by overrated you mean that you're talking about a record you think is great and we should all pay tribute to... I just don't see it. Excuse me if I sound a little bit agressive; but this is just the kind of empirical line of thought that makes evryone believe that the world should be meassured according to just one set of values.

I thought overrated meant that too many people thought it was a brilliant album when in fact its not that good!
overrate verb [T often passive] to have too good an opinion of something:

My mistake, but it works both ways. To ask if something is under/over rated means that there is a way to fnid out about it. Like a goo/bad subatomic music meassurement device. I mean, we are talking about a very subjective phenomenon (music).

Overrated, underrated, polls pitting Robert Fripp against every other
guitarist possible, often music is treated here like the equivalent of
Olympic sports, or even its worse, Big-Time Wrestling. Refreshing would
be more discussion of musical content and style, and new possibilities.
Art is not a competitive sport, there's really no "best" after a certain level
of artistic accomplishment, just varying strengths that compliment each
other quite well.

I agree with the previous post. The way to look at music has much more to do with contents. This under / over rated thing is very vague.

At the end music is art and every aspect of art is resumed into one word: SUBJECTIVE, and that's the true essence of it, we cannot pretend other people has the same tastes that we have, however i think this site has been made for that purpose, encouraging people to hear prog and the already prog-fan comment about his likes and dislikes. Eventually we are growing up and within the years we learn to listen a lot more styles of music, and respect them, and that kind of respect must be present for the overrated or underrated ideas from anyone.

I don't think any prog can be overrated. Its rated correctly. If you don't like some of it that is purely personal taste.ie I don't think that Dark Side Of The Moon,Images and Words,Script For A Jesters Tear,Lamb Lies Down On Broadway or In A Glass House are worthy of all the acolades thrown at them BUT that is because I don't appreciate them NOT because they are overrated.Suggesting anything in prog is overrated is a way of saying I don't like it personally but trying to look clever in saying it.
