Genesis live albums

I've been thinking about this and although my favourite Genesis era is the Gabriel/Rutherford/Banks/Hackett/Collins line up, the best live album they have released in my opinion is Three Sides Live.

The old/new mix of tracks works well and the drumming from Chester Thompson & Phil Collins is stunning - the songs just sound so dynamic.  I like Seconds Out but I've always found it "duller" than Three Sides.  Same applies to Genesis Live - I love all the songs on this album but maybe the recording of the songs lets it down slightly.

I don't own "The Longs" or "The Shorts" so can't really comment on these 2 !!

I'll be interested to see which way the vote goes.......

Genesis Live for me.

The tracklist is similar in quality to the one on Seconds Out... but has a better singer. Not to mention an "unaccompanied bass pedal solo by Michael Rutherford".

But 'Genesis Live' is very close behind. Seconds Out gets the vote because of the brilliant versions of Firth of Fifth and Cinema Show, and of course Los Endos. I love the power of the duel drumming against those Taurus bass pedals. Such a great sound!

 

All of them are great but they are also flawed.

I voted "TWWW -The Longs", because I think it's the most consistent and the most underrated and perhaps the most interesting one.

"The old medley" (almost 20 minutes!) is fantastic and the closing "Drum Duet" is excellent. Between those two tracks are four of the best post-Abacab songs: "Home by the Sea", "Domino", "Driving the last Spike" and "Fading Lights". Absolutely no weak track. A very good ending of the Collins-era.

I voted for "Live", but I really love the version of "In the Cage" on 3sides... really amazing...

I have all those albums, and my favourite is "Second Out". "Genesis Live"'s sound quality is a bit below of the standards, so I cannot choose it.

Out of the choice given, I have to say Genesis Live. Ironically, I always used to say Seconds Out, but now I believe the older album has the edge. The sound is more up front, the performances are excellent, yet it retains the true 'live' feel. Even though Hackett sounds below his usual standard when playing the solo in 'The Knife' I feel this was done intentionally, so as not to plagiarise too much Anthony Phillips's original version. However, I agree with 'Meurgyls111'. The first three discs of the live archive boxed set are probably the strongest live material they have ever officially released. The whole 'Lamb' is stunning, and done in one take too! Only the odd vocal had to be touched up, Tony Banks says. Amazing. And the live tracks on disc three are stunning, especially 'Supper's Ready' with Gabriel himself singing it! Those tracks are from '73 and should have been on the first Live album. Pity they weren't.

At one point I would have voted for Genesis Live...but I  nowadays I don't find the versions of The Return Of The Giant Hogweed or The Knife better than the original...so my vote changed for Seconds Out...
